The first Nissan Leaf was launched in Japan and the USA in December 2010. Sales of the world’s first mass-produced electric vehicle have since reached over half a million units.
Celebrating this milestone, Nissan USA spoke to one of the first owners who purchase the Nissan Leaf back in December 2010. In total, over 118,000 units of the first-generation Leaf found homes in the US.
Shannon Monroe from Bellevue, Washington, had his first electric vehicle (EV) experience in his neighbours’ home-made D.I.Y. project when he was a child. When the Nissan announced the formal order-taking procedure for the new Leaf, Monroe stayed up till midnight to ensure he got his order in line.
Sharing the first few years of ownership of the Nissan Leaf, Monroe also convinced his parents after returning home from the hospital in the Nissan Leaf. “As soon as my parents realized, we were that committed to it, they went out and bought a Nissan Leaf as well. That was another great moment that we made another transition for someone else,” said Shannon.
“It is a great feeling to know that, for ten years I haven’t had to purchase gasoline, I haven’t contributed to those emissions,” accentuated Christin Monroe, wife of Shannon.
Mrs Monroe drives the Nissan Leaf to work, send her kids to school as well as taekwondo practice. It is the household’s daily car and has travelled over 200,000 kilometres since starting their ownership journey in Florida. Apart for scheduled maintenance, Monroe said there hasn’t been any unplanned trips to the workshop.
Monroe definitely has huge praises for the Nissan Leaf and its EV technology, saying “there is no going back once you had a Nissan EV”. It sounds like the new crossover-sized Nissan Ariya is a perfect replacement for the Monroes as their children are growing older.
