Gojek, Hailing Towards A Greener Ecosystem

Gojek, the Indonesian ride-hailing start-up, has plans that will see every car and motorcycle on its platform an electric vehicle (EV) by 2030.

The company officially announced the plan on Friday, with a zero-emission pledge laid out in its first annual sustainability report.

Gojek’s co-chief executive officer and co-founder Kevin Aluwi said, “Our target is to work with various different players within the industry and government to reduce the cost of EVs to about 30% lower than internal combustion engine vehicles”.

Due to the country’s infrastructure that only has about 100 charging stations at the present time, the expected cost of going full electric ecosystem will be high.

On that note, Gojek will look into supporting the country’s development of their EV industry by including the planning on the expansion of infrastructures such as battery swap and charging stations.

However, for the drivers, their main concern in switching to EVs revolves around the aspects of power, infrastructure and cost. Thus, to help resolve it, Gojek will be exploring leasing arrangements primarily through its financial services arm.

Furthermore, the Indonesian government is also helping Gojek to form an agreement with the Chinese battery maker, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd (CATL) to supply EV batteries.

He concluded, “We do know that the building of this electric vehicle ecosystem from raw materials to battery production to vehicle production is something that many in the government see as a big part of the future in Indonesia”.

As a side note, in addition to this new greener direction, Gojek has also launched programmes to reduce single-use plastic in food delivery to help achieve its zero waste and zero emission goals by 2030.
