A compelling blend of exclusive driving pleasure and superb performance is BMW’s newest addition to its refreshed 2022 model line-up, the new M4 Competition Convertible with M xDrive.

Embodying the classic M formula of dynamism, agility and precision, the beast that is the M4 Competition Convertible sports a powertrain level up and a debut of an all-new drivetrain.

First off, giving the beast its mean presence is the stance. It measures at 4,794 mm in length, 1,887 mm in width, 1,395 mm in height, wheelbase spanning 2,857 mm and ground clearance of 121 mm.

Weighing in at 1,920 kg, the M4 Convertible has significantly grown by 4.6-inches in length, 0.7 inches in width, and has a longer wheelbase by 1.8-inches compared to its predecessor.

Tilting to the top, the M4 Convertible comes with a new roof at which the old hardtop is swapped out in favour of a lighter, reinforced fabric soft top that is 40 percent lighter.

It comes standard in black with an optional Anthracite Silver finish for a funkier outlook. The roof can be opened and closed while travelling up to 31 mph (50 km/h) and takes only 18 seconds.

Gazing at the front, BMW’s new hallmark kidney grille commands the presence, and paired to it is a set of full-LED headlights with U-shaped DRLs.

Touching on the latter, an added option of LED headlights, and BMW LaserLight with selective lighting can also be fitted for an extra cost.

Panning around the M4 Convertible, its wing mirrors, skirtings, and the spoiler lip on the tailgate adds extra flair to the overall silhouette and aids to the car’s aerodynamics as well.

Transmitting the power onto the asphalt is a set of 19-inch wheels wrapped in 275/35 tyres at the front and 20-inch wheels in 285/30 tyres at the rear.

Completing the beast’s hide, the M4 Convertible can be cloaked in 11 different exterior hues. It includes two non-metallic shades, seven metallic and two frozen matte colours.

For instance, the new shades joining the current palette comprises Sao Paulo Yellow, Toronto Red, Isle of Man Green, Individual Frozen Brilliant White and Individual Frozen Portimao Blue.

Additionally, BMW also offers an M exterior carbon package in which the front air intakes, wing mirror caps and the rear diffuser are composed of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP).

Hopping inside, the 2022 M4 Convertible’s interior is quite fancy while at the same time indulging the in-cabin ambience of the four-seater with a racing-car feel.

The boldly styled shoulder panelling framed by seamless trim edging in high-gloss black and subtly styled domes on the soft top cover stunningly defines the convertible specific ambience.

Harmonised together with the driver-focused cockpit design and M-specific controls, it brings a highly exclusive racing flair to the interior.

Speaking of which, behind the M-specific leather steering wheel with red colour accents on its M buttons and gearshift paddles, present is a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Also, sitting on the centre console that gets an M-specific gearshift lever is a 10.25-inch touchscreen that runs on the iDrive 7.0 system. It supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality.

Besides that, it comes fitted with standard features such as tri-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, Harmon Kardon audio system, BMW Live Cockpit Professional and navigation.

Furthermore, what comes a given upon purchase are M Sport heated seats with illuminated ‘M4’ logos. Along with four different upholstery options to choose from.

Said choices comprises Yas Marina Blue Merino Leather, Silverstone Merino Leather, Kyalami Orange Merino Leather and Black Extended Merino Leather.

To make it even sportier and plusher, BMW also offers extras such as heated M Carbon bucket seats, which are 10 kg lighter than the standard seats, neck warmer and standard seats with ventilation.

Lurking inside the beast’s chassis is the famed 3.0-litre, 6-cylinder, M TwinPower Turbo engine that puts out 510 hp (375 kW) of power at 6,250 rpm and 650 Nm of torque at 2,750 rpm to 5,500 rpm.

This significant increase of 59 hp in its max output over its predecessor enables the beast to dash from 0-100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds and hitting a top speed of 250 km/h.

Albeit the top speed is electronically capped at 250 km/h, through the M Driver Package it can be unlocked and further pushed up to 280 km/h with the rev limiter hitting 7,200 rpm.

All that power the mill is harbouring gets routed to all the wheels, courtesy of the xDrive system via an 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic.

In terms of the drivetrain, drivers have a selection ranging from four-wheel drive, four-wheel-drive sport and two-wheel-drive settings that comes with three drive modes, Road, Sport, and Track.

Speeding and braking come hand in hand. Thus, the braking duties of the M4 Convertible have been taken over by 15-inch rotors with 6-piston callipers at the front and 14.6-inch rotors at the rear.

Nonetheless, in case more stopping power is needed, an optional ceramic rotor that measures 15.7 inches at the front and 15 inches at the back can be opted out for.

Being a BMW, its ride dynamic is not complete without a highly tuned performance. Hence, the beast comes installed with an Adaptive M suspension setup with electronically controlled dampers.

It is then paired with an exhaust system that features a quad-tailpipe setup and comes with electrically-controlled flaps.

Along with all that driving dynamic and enhanced performance, a suite of driver assistance features has also been installed in the M4 Convertible.

Ranging from Lane Departure Warning, Speed Limiter Information, Active Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Rear Collision Preparation.

Moreover, also offered for an extra cost is an optional package that tops the standard list of active safety features.

It includes Parking Assistance Package and Package Plus, Driving Assistance Professional Package, Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, Active Lane Keeping Assistant, Active Blind Spot Protection, Evasion Aid and Front and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert.

Wrapping it up, production of the exclusive 2022 M4 Competition Convertible with xDrive begins in July 2021, and shortly after, the 86,300 USD (RM 357,929) sports car will make its debut in October.
