MIMOS builds Malaysia's first RE-EV motorcycle
MIMOS Bhd developed the first Range Extended Electric Vehicle (RE-EV) motorcycle in Malaysia in collaboration with Motosikal dan Enjin Nasional Sdn Bhd (Modenas) and Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UniMAP).
The High Value-Added and Complicated Product Development Program (HVA), a government initiative to boost the manufacturing sector's capability and efficiency in generating high value-added and complex products, was mentioned by MIMOS in a statement released.
An ICE genset is incorporated into the two-year RE-EV project to give additional charging to the battery, which can increase the range.
"Compared to a hybrid EV where both the ICE and electric motor are used as a drivetrain system, the RE-EV is a simpler system, where it does not need a drive chain to turn the wheels.
“This will reduce rider anxiety when driving long distances as the genset will be activated when the existing battery power drops below a certain threshold,” according to the statement.
The RE-EV motorcycle, which was completed last month, was developed with the use of a removable battery that can also be backed up with a battery exchange.
Meanwhile, MIMOS President and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Iskandar Samad, said government grants such as HVA proved to be able to assist the industry in conducting research and development to increase commercialization in high value economic sectors, especially for Malaysian enterprises by offering many economic opportunities.
"The development of this RE-EV motorcycle is expected to be a major driver of the two-wheeler industry not only in the domestic market, but also the regional market." he said.
Apart from RE-EV motorcycles, MIMOS has also completed two other projects under the HVA grant, namely Application Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) in collaboration with Oppstar Technology Sdn Bhd and Asset Optimization Leveraging on IIOT Technologies for O&G Industry in collaboration with Neu Zenith Sdn Bhd which was successfully completed. in April 2021.
ASIC is an intellectual property (IP) design project with artificial intelligence (AI) classification to assist semiconductor industry players by providing IP ASICs that can be integrated into their set of semiconductor AI chips and provide AI classification on big data chips.
The IIOT Technologies for O&G Industry project, MIMOS developed a Wireless IoT -based Data Acquisition System for Rough Environments (iDASH) to measure various parameters such as vibration, acoustics and temperature in harsh environments such as oil and gas.
According to the statement, MIMOS is committed to supporting and collaborating with industry players in the success of projects to drive Malaysian industries and businesses towards automation and digitization to help contribute to the country's economic growth as well as empower the industry.
