MAM debunks allegations of suspension by FIM

Earlier this week, a screenshot of what appears to be an internal circular from the International Motorcycling Federation, better known as the FIM (Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme), has gone viral on WhatsApp.

Said screenshot alleges that the Motorsports Association of Malaysia (MAM) has been suspended as the country’s sanctioning body (FMN) for motorcycle racing. Supposedly dated Nov 4, it also alludes that MAM’s suspension as an FMN by the FIM stems from an outstanding debt amounting to €19,478 (approx. RM92,421.49) for services rendered by said international federation.

Naturally, this sparked controversy, with many members of the local motorsports community speaking out about it online. The implications of these allegations would’ve deeply affected said community and its scene, especially regarding the legitimacy of both national championships and competition licenses that the MAM sanctions and issues respectively.

Now, MAM has issued an official response over said matter. “The screenshot of the FIM intranet regarding the outstanding amount due by MAM was dated 4 Nov, 2022 before the discussion between MAM and FIM could be concluded on 7 Nov, 2022,” reads the association’s statement.

Based on discussions it held with FIM, the association is also confident that all administrative matters have been resolved amicably. “The MAM’s powers as an FMN, such as sanctioning of international events, provisions relating to race officials and etc, are not affected,” adds the MAM through its statement before concluding it with a message of thanks to its affiliates for their support.

It is understood that said screenshot was distributed by unknown external parties, though the reasons for which remain somewhat unclear. Nevertheless, with the official clarification, MAM’s continued status as the national motorsports sanctioning body – both two- and four-wheels – is clear. It remains on course with its core objectives towards the further development of local motorsports and its talents.
