Transport Minister Anthony Loke has addressed the Transport Ministry of concerns about the Road Transport Department's (JPJ) lack of effective control in the registration of classic vehicle number plates.

Loke announced the formation of a special task team, which includes members of the Transport Ministry's Integrity Unit, in response to these concerns. This task force is in charge of looking into claims of misconduct within JPJ regarding the registration of vintage vehicle licence plates.

The issue was raised during a post-Cabinet discussion following the release of documents known as the JPJandora Papers by Telegram Edisi Siasat. According to Edisi Siasat, classic registration numbers were allegedly revived and sold for large prices, with JPJ officials apparently arranging the transactions.

Among the documents is a 28-page report with a list of classic vehicle licence plates, some of which were allegedly re-registered and then sold at high rates to people or businesses. The paper also includes details on the number of plates affected since 2007, broken down by year and state, with Selangor, Perak, and Johor having the most.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke stressed the significance of putting JPJ's director-general, Datuk Rospiagus Taha, in the special task team because the department had critical information and access to the suspected misbehaviour under investigation. Loke stressed that Rospiagus, who took over as JPJ DG on June 19, had no inherent interest in the probe.
