US Revises Tailpipe Emissions Rules, Impacting EV Adoption

Web_CariCarz_Tesla-Model-3-02-full-(3)-full-(1).jpg The White House is getting ready to loosen regulations governing tailpipe emissions, which as they stand now would force automakers to cut the emissions of new cars by 56% by 2032. By 2032, automakers predict that 67% of the new cars they sell will need to be electric if the regulations stay the same.

They could set a lower goal for the sales of electric vehicles (EVs) if the regulations were loosened.

The Biden administration is cited by Reuters, which states that "the EPA will slow the pace of its proposed yearly emissions requirements through 2030." Even with the regulation loosened, EVs would still be vigorously promoted. However, by 2030, "EVs are expected to account for less than 60% of total vehicles produced."
More EVs are being sold than any other kind of vehicle. However, this growth has recently slowed down in pace.  Growth in EV sales is limited by several factors. Infrastructure cannot keep up with demand, and there is still very little support for charging EVs across a large portion of the nation. IMG_4247-full.jpg

Even in areas of the nation where the expansion of infrastructure makes charging feasible, EVs might not be the best option for the majority of drivers. EVs of today have limits when it comes to towing and hauling. It may be dangerously impractical to evacuate hurricane zones in an electric vehicle due to lengthy charging times.

High costs continue to be a significant obstacle for many. Although EV costs dropped significantly in the previous year, they still remain higher than those of gas-powered vehicles.

In Malaysia for example, there are a number of additional barriers preventing more EVs from being driven on our roads in addition to the country's inadequate EV charging infrastructure.
Even with government tax breaks on electric vehicles and Malaysia poised to become a high-income nation, most people still find EVs to be prohibitively expensive.
