First Look: 2024 Chery Omoda E5 – Up to 430 KM Range, RM160K Est.
The Chery Omoda E5 is poised to make its debut later this month, arriving as Chery Malaysia's first all-electric offering.
Chery Malaysia is about to introduce its first-ever all-electric model this coming week, and it is known as the Chery Omoda E5. Ahead of its planned debut, we’ve been given special early access to size up one firsthand, giving a glimpse of what customers can expect from this upcoming EV crossover.
Besides some EV-specific makeover, the Omoda E5 looks identical to its ICE twin, the Chery Omoda 5.
Starting with its exterior design, the Omoda E5 looks identical to its ICE-powered twin, albeit featuring some EV-specific tweaks, including a cleaner and closed-off front grille design, which houses the car’s charging port. Besides the absence of a tailpipe, the Omoda E5 also rides on a different set of 18-inch wheels, which feature a more enclosed design for better aerodynamics.
Under its clean front grille design lies an active grille shutter that opens to help cool down its front-mounted electric motor setup while staying shut to provide better aerodynamics to the car.
The Omoda E5 boasts a very striking and posh cabin design, featuring a two-tone bright colour theme.
Unlike the unit previewed prior, this specific unit of the Omoda E5 boasts a slightly different cabin design, featuring a striking two-tone blue and beige leather upholstery material with faux wooden trims. Key pieces of equipment present here include the dual-screen setup featuring a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central infotainment system, a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone climate control with rear vents, and a multi-colour ambient lighting system, to name a few.
Aside from supporting both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay wirelessly, said infotainment system is also powered by a Qualcomm 8155 system on chip (SoC), which promises snappy performance.
On the safety front, the Omoda E5 comes standard with a 360-degree camera view, automatic high beam, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), as well as a slew of ADAS features. This includes functions like lead vehicle departure alert (LVDA), front collision warning (FCW), autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning (LDW), lane keep assist (LKA), rear cross traffic alert (RCTA), and many more.
A little refresher on the Omoda E5’s hardware, this EV crossover underpins the same T1X platform used on its ICE twin, the Omoda 5. Like the unit we’ve previewed in China, the Malaysian-spec E5 is also juiced by a BYD-sourced ‘Blade’ LFP-type battery with a 61-kWh capacity, granting this EV SUV a claimed WLTP range of 430 KM.
Said battery in turn powers up the E5’s front-mounted (FWD) electric motor setup, which is rated at 201 HP and 340 NM. This enables a decent 0-100 KM/H sprint time of 7.6 seconds.
Charging-wise, the Omoda E5 supports AC charging at 9.9 kW as well as DC charging at up to 80 kW, with the latter method allowing a 30-80% charge in just 30 minutes. Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function is also present here, delivering up to 3.3 kW of energy to any small electrical appliances.
Chery Omoda E5 is now available for booking, with a tentative price tag of RM160,000.
Set to make its official debut some time later this month, the all-new Chery Omoda E5 is now available for booking with a tentative price tag of RM160,000. This puts the Omoda E5 neck-to-neck with the BYD Atto 3, which currently retails at RM 149,800 for the base Standard Range variant and RM 167,800 for the top-spec Extended Range variant.
The Chery Omoda E5 is now on display at selected Chery Malaysia’s showrooms, welcoming any prospective buyers to size up this EV crossover firsthand. For more information regarding the Omoda E5, you can check out Chery Malaysia’s official website. Alternatively, we've also put up a nice gallery of the Omoda E5 down here, so be sure to check that out, too.
