Perhaps not the 'Raptor' many would imagined, but this electrified off-roader made by GWM with said nameplate does exists.

Whilst the ‘Raptor’ nameplate is strongly associated with rugged, 4x4 off-road vehicles made by a certain blue-oval marque, this isn’t the case in China. In fact, Chinese automaker Great Wall Motor (GWM) has been selling a rugged 4x4 SUV called the Raptor Hi4 under its Haval banner for a bit.

Said model was recently updated and revealed online ahead of a planned public showing at the upcoming Auto China 2024 show in Beijing later this month. According to Haval sub-brand manager Zhao Yongpo, this updated version was built and optimised based on feedback from its users.

Recently updated for its latest 2024 model year guise, it appears little has changed in the Haval Raptor Hi4. However, full details are expected once it publicly debuts at Auto China 2024 later this month.

At the time of writing, GWM (Haval) have yet to release size and powertrain details for the new Raptor Hi4. For reference, the outgoing version sits 4,800 MM long with a 2,738 MM wheelbase, 1,916 MM wide, and 1,822 MM tall, thus making this quite a sizeable SUV indeed.

As aptly suggested by its name, this  SUV  harnesses GWM’s plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain system that’s composed of a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and dual e-motors. For reference, the recently launched GWM Tank 400 Hi4-T model, which uses a larger 2.0-litre mill, outputs 408 HP and 750 NM.

Not only off-road-capable, the Haval Raptor Hi4 also boasts a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain setup that promises near-unrivalled pep.

As for styling, this updated 2024 model version remains largely unchanged from before. Minor changes were done with its three-stripe grille, as well as the brand and model emblems. Retained are touches like the Land Rover Defender-esque taillights.

On board, the updated 2024MY version’s cabin also remains largely unchanged, though GWM (Haval) have yet to disclose features and equipment list. Some upgrades are expected here, especially with its array of active driver assist (ADAS) features.

On board, the Haval Raptor Hi4 appears largely unchanged from before too, though upgraded tech and features are expected to be announced once the model is shown at Auto China 2024.

For reference, the outgoing version of the GWM Haval Raptor Hi4 already boasts Level 2 semi-autonomous driving abilities powered by no less than 11 sensors that also includes a fusion solution of camera and radar sensors.

More details are expected once the model debuts publicly at the Auto China 2024 show next week. In the meantime, are you digging this Chinese ‘alternative’ to the Defender and G-Class? Share your take in the comments below…
