1,577 High-Risk Slopes Identified In Malaysia - KKR
Photo: NST. Using the Hazard and Risk Map of Slopes created by the Public Works Department (JKR), the Ministry of Public Works (KKR) has determined that 1,577 of the 34,714 slopes along Federal Roads nationwide are at very high risk, Bernama has reported.
Therefore, the ministry's job through JKR is to provide technical advisory services to the NADMA of the Prime Minister's Department regarding the provision of machinery and technical services, the assessment of disaster-related damage to public infrastructure, the implementation of risk-reduction strategies, and suggested remedies for a slope-related disaster.
“If a disaster involves water crossings or landslides, JKR will take several actions, including road closures, issuing warnings, providing alternative routes, constructing diversions and repairing affected roads. In addition, JKR, through its slope engineering branch, issues early warnings based on rainfall and slope movement data from the Early Warning System in high-risk areas,” the ministry said in a statement.
49 rain gauge stations have been placed nationwide by the government, including 37 in Peninsular Malaysia, 9 in Sabah, and 3 in Sarawak, to record rainfall data and provide early warnings when readings exceed threshold levels at high-risk locations.

“Three robotic total stations (RTS) and a global navigation satellite system (GNSS) have also been installed at Sections 44 and 46 of FT185 Jalan Simpang Pulai-Lojing-Gua Musang to monitor slope surface movement,” the ministry added.
Up until September 2024, 147 locations along Peninsular Malaysia's Jalan Persekutuan have seen slope repair projects costing RM104.84 million, according to the ministry.
The Ministry has been allocated RM118 million for 2025, which will be used to carry out slope prevention and repair procedures. The development budget for the investigation of slope protection and repair is also part of the allocation.
In the East Coast zone, which includes Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and portions of Perak, regular maintenance was also done at the same time for slopes classified as high-risk and very high-risk.
Furthermore, the Upgrade of the Integrated Slope Management System (ISMAS) and the Installation and Maintenance of the Landslide Early Warning System (SAATR) will be completed.
