Over 12,000 vehicles were inspected in a special nationwide op conducted by JPJ on New Year's Eve (Dec 31) earlier this week.

Whilst many Malaysians enjoyed the festivities of New Year’s Eve, personnel from the Road Transport Department (JPJ) had no such luxury. That’s because the department conducted a special nationwide operation on Tuesday night (Dec 31).

The effort saw the department and its enforcement personnel inspect over 12,000 vehicles in total. Various traffic offences and violations were detected during this massive operation conducted in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, Pahang, Perak, Penang, and Terengganu.

In the federal capital, authorities took action against 731 vehicles for various offences, with 117 vehicles impounded, including 101 motorcycles, following inspections on 5,094 vehicles, reports locally daily The Star.

Furthermore, Kuala Lumpur Road Transport Department (JPJ) director Hamidi Adam told the daily that the  operation focused on safety and compliance with traffic laws, especially for motorcyclists.

"During the operation, which also involved the Immigration Department, 75 foreign drivers were inspected, with 30 of them detained. "In addition, the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) conducted urine tests on 26 individuals. Two of them tested positive for methamphetamine, while one tested positive for opiate drugs,” added Hamidi further.

Besides that, Selangor state JPJ enforcers inspected a total of 7,124 vehicles in their leg of the nationwide op. From which, 827 notices were issued for various violations such as driving without a licence and expired road tax.

State JPJ director Azrin Borhan also adds that three individuals were also detained following drug urine tests conducted jointly by the AADK in this operation.

The operation yielded thousands of summonses and notices issued, with dozens of vehicles also seized for various offences and violations.

The Pahang state leg of this operation saw 555 summonses issued after 2,741 vehicles were inspected at five locations. Adding to which, 25 motorcycles were also impounded over various offences from this op too, which also involved the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM).

In Perak, 271 summonses were issued after 750 vehicles were inspected, revealed state JPJ director Mohammad Yusoff Abustan. From which, 184 vehicles were penalised, including 172 motorcycles, 11 cars and one bus. The most common offence detected here were both driving without a licence and expired motor vehicle licences and insurance.

In Penang, 540 motorcycles were inspected, with 135 of which issued with summonses whilst eight were seized by state JPJ enforcers over various offences.

In Teregganu, 6,267 summonses were issued after 27,239 motorcycles were inspected by state JPJ officers as part of a two-month long special operation than began on Nov 1, notes state JPJ director Zamri Samion.
