The Road Transport Department (JPJ) issued a total of 107,014 notices for various traffic offences during its 2025 Chinese New Year Special Operation, which took place from Jan 20 to Feb 9.

According to JPJ DG Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli, his officers had inspected 429,423 vehicles throughout the operation which also led to the seizure of 724 vehicles. The most frequent violation recorded was operating without a valid road tax or insurance (29,994 cases).

This was followed by 20,414 cases of individuals driving without a valid or expired license and 15,610 other technical infractions such as tyre and brake defects.

Speaking during a press conference at the Sungai Besi toll plaza, Datuk Aedy urged motorists to ensure their vehicles are in proper order before setting out on journeys, emphasising the potential risks posed to others on the road.

He added that compared to last year, this year the number of notices issued is down by almost half (207,127 notices in 2024) which he attributes to more effective enforcement strategies and a heightened awareness among motorists regarding the consequences of non-compliance.

“By reinforcing the perception of being caught, we aim to lower accident and fatality rates through strict enforcement,” he stated.

As part of the operation, a temporary ban on goods vehicles was also enforced for four days (Jan 27-28 and Feb 1-2). However, despite this ban, JPJ had detected some operators failing to adhere to the restriction, leading to the detention of 21 vehicles under Section 59 of the Road Transport Act 1987 with an additional, 140 notices (JPJ P22) were c issued for expired road tax and other related offences.

The large-scale operation was conducted with support from the PDRM, Plus Malaysia Berhad and the National Anti-Drug Agency (NADA).
