12 New Trains For KTM Komuter Utara, First Delivery In 22 Months
Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that the construction of 12 new electric train sets (ETS) for the Komuter Utara service will commence immediately. The delivery of the 12 ETS, according to Loke, will be carried out in phases over a period of 36 months.
As a medium-term measure, the government had issued a Letter of Acceptance to CRRC Rolling Stock Centre (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd through an open tender for the procurement of 12 Three Car Set (3CS) trains on March 20, he says.
According to a Bernama report, the minister stated that the project's initial train is scheduled for delivery within 22 months. The project, with a total expenditure of RM283 million, encompasses the design, construction, delivery, testing, and commissioning of the trains. Upon completion, the trains will be transferred to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) for full operational use.
“The procurement of these 12 new train sets is expected to improve the frequency of KTM Komuter Utara services, reducing passenger waiting times and providing a more comfortable, modern and efficient travel experience,” he said.
The Ministry of Transport, through KTM, has been upgrading services in the northern sector since 2023. According to Loke, these upgrades include redeploying train carriages from Subang Skypark to the north to increase the frequency of KTM Komuter Utara trains, and expanding KTM Komuter services from Butterworth-Padang Rengas to Ipoh.
The Ministry's initiatives proved to be effective, as evidenced by a 29% increase in the average daily ridership of KTM Komuter Utara services between 2023 and 2024, rising from 12,668 to 16,363 passengers.
