Gov't Set To Use MyKad For RON95 Subsidy, Citing Success With Sara
The Madani government has decided to use MyKad for targeted subsidies, citing its effective use in the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) aid program. Finance Minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan pointed out that nearly all Malaysians have MyKad, making it a more efficient and inclusive way to distribute aid.
“The finance ministry is in the process of creating a system where we can use the MyKad to manage the subsidy rationalisation,” he told reporters, adding that the Cabinet will likely discuss providing appropriate support to those in need as the next step.
The minister also affirmed the Madani government's plan to implement the RON 95 subsidy rationalisation in the latter half of the year. He noted ongoing cabinet discussions to finalise the best mechanism for its full rollout to the public.
“MoF will proceed with the subsidy rationalisation, but for now, the priority is to ensure that the right recipients are identified.
“Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, together with the Cabinet, is discussing the eligibility threshold for Malaysians, where the qualifying level to receive subsidies will be raised,” he says in a Malay Mail report.
Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim recently reassured Malaysians that the price of RON95 petrol will not increase. This statement follows an announcement by Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli that the Ministry of Finance, also overseen by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, has officially taken over the management of targeted RON95 fuel subsidies.
