MG has announced a bold plan to launch 13 new models over the next two years as it accelerates its move into electrification. These will span pure electric, plug-in hybrid, and extended range powertrains, covering everything from sedans and SUVs to sports cars and shooting brakes.

More than RMB10 billion (RM5.9 billion) will be invested into this product offensive. MG promises these won’t be generic EVs but models with strong MG character, focused on performance and built on SAIC Motor’s core technologies, including smart chassis systems, battery innovations, and intelligent cockpits.

At the heart of this strategy is the new MG4, which had already begun accepting small orders from August 5, ahead of its official launch on September 5. It’s positioned to be a game-changer not only in terms of its design and tech but also its packaging and efficiency.

Physically, the new MG4 has grown in every dimension. It now measures 4,395 MM long with a 2,750 MM wheelbase, 1,842 MM wide, and 1,551 MM tall - the wheelbase marking a 45 mm stretch over the outgoing model. This provides better proportions and more cabin space, making it more appealing as a practical EV hatchback.

The design has also been completely overhauled. The front end, roofline, doors, and rear have all been restyled, taking cues from the smaller MG3 and the Cyberster. It now features a full-width light bar and arrow-shaped taillights at the rear, further emphasising the car’s sportier stance.

Under the skin, the new MG4 features a 120 kW rear-mounted electric motor, delivering a top speed of 160 km/h. Despite slightly less peak output compared to the previous 125 kW unit, the car is now lighter at just 1,485 KG, down from 1,641 KG, resulting in a better power-to-weight ratio and improved overall efficiency.

The highlight, however, is its expected adoption of semi-solid-state battery technology—the secret to the weight reduction. This new battery type offers a major leap over traditional liquid lithium-ion packs.

Benefits of the semi-solid pack include higher energy density, 25% weight reduction, greater safety, and longer cycle life, with theoretical lifespans of up to 45,000 charge cycles under ideal conditions. Although official battery capacity hasn’t been confirmed, the pack is expected to deliver more range and quicker charging thanks to this next-gen battery chemistry.

Performance remains a cornerstone of MG’s identity. The MG4 will also feature SAIC’s intelligent chassis system for improved handling and ride comfort, ensuring the new model remains true to MG’s sporty roots, even as it evolves into a smarter and more efficient EV.

The digital experience is taking a big leap as well. The new MG4 will be the first model to launch with OPPO’s Smart Travel system, allowing seamless integration between the vehicle and smartphones. Drivers can run mobile apps directly on the car screen without separate downloads, offering a more intuitive user experience.

This new connectivity suite works across Android and Apple devices, including screen projection and floating window functions. OPPO’s ecosystem, powered by the Intelligent Car Connectivity Open Alliance (ICCOA), will also support features like shake-to-navigate, full-app mirroring, and driver profile syncing.

Outside China, the MG4 has shown better sales momentum. However, in Malaysia the brand is still struggling to take off, with just 18 units of the MG4 sold in May. This redesigned version may be MG’s best chance to reinvigorate demand and appeal to a broader audience.
