Viral: Kid Thrown Into Steering Wheel, Netizens Slam Parents Over Car Seat Neglect
Let’s be honest, no one gets into a car thinking today’s the day something will go wrong. But this viral video is now a powerful reminder that it only takes a second for things to go south.
In the clip, a small child is seen standing freely in the front passenger seat, with no seatbelt or car seat in sight. Within moments, the driver slams the brakes to avoid hitting a slower car ahead.
The sudden stop throws the child straight into the steering wheel, her head hitting the windshield. The driver, believed to be the boy’s father, was trying to avoid a collision, but the damage was already done.
The footage, reshared on Threads by a user named Ahmad Mukhlis, has since stirred up heated conversations online. Most people weren’t just shocked by the incident, they were angry.
Unfortunately, this isn’t a one-off. There have been many heartbreaking cases where children, not secured in car seats, suffer serious injuries, some left disabled from head trauma, and others don’t even survive.
As upsetting as these stories are, many parents are still unaware or worse, ignore the importance of using a car seat. Some don’t want to spend on one. Others give in to tantrums. Yes, it’s hard to hear your kid crying because they don’t want to be buckled in. But their safety? That’s not something you negotiate.
Many pointed out that it’s 2025, and there’s no excuse for not using a child car seat. “It’s not a matter of comfort or preference,” one user wrote. “It’s basic safety. If you’re in a moving vehicle, you’re exposed to danger, act like it.”
Another added, “I started using a car seat when my baby was two months old. Sure, they cry sometimes, but I’d rather deal with a few tears than take risks with their life.”
Others chimed in with frustration over those who do use car seats but skip buckling their kids in properly or worse, place them in the front seat. “Front seats aren’t made for kids, especially not with airbags. Car seats belong in the back, buckled securely. Period,” a commenter stressed.
For context, Malaysia made car seats mandatory back in 2020. The rule applies to all children under 12 years old, weighing less than 36kg or under 136cm in height. Only car seats certified under United Nations regulations (R44 or R129) are legal.
The law came in response to a grim statistic: between 2007 and 2017, more than 1,500 children under the age of 10 lost their lives in road crashes across the country.
Every parent wants their child safe. We can’t control the road, but we can control whether they’re buckled in. When it comes to safety, “just this once” is never worth the risk.
