Penang Expects 2.2M Vehicles This Christmas, School Holidays
Penang is gearing up for a very busy holiday period, with traffic expected to surge as school holidays and Christmas celebrations begin.
Authorities estimate that more than 2.2 million vehicles will be entering the state over the coming weeks, making it one of the busiest festive stretches of the year.
According to Penang Police Chief Datuk Azizee Ismail, the projection is based on traffic trends seen during past major festive seasons, alongside the ongoing Penang Festival, which runs from Dec 6 until Jan 10, 2026 and continues to draw visitors from across the country.

Nationwide, traffic volumes are also expected to climb sharply. Police anticipate around two million vehicles per week using major highways during peak holiday travel, with routes leading to Penang among the most heavily used.
"Traditionally, festive seasons see about 2.2 million vehicles entering or passing through Penang via the first and second Penang bridges, and this year is expected to follow a similar pattern," he told Bernama.
Motorists should be prepared for serious congestion, especially at the main entrance of the Penang Bridge.
Traffic is expected to be particularly heavy today and tomorrow, boosted by the government’s 50% toll discount, which tends to encourage more people to travel at the same time.

To manage the surge, police are deploying additional officers at known congestion hotspots and accident-prone areas.
Drivers heading to Penang are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and remain patient as authorities work to keep traffic flowing during the festive rush.
