More than half of automotive-related businesses in Ampang Jaya have come on board with a municipal requirement to rent designated parking bays outside their premises, four months after the policy took effect.

The rule, enforced by the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) since Aug 2025, affects workshops, car wash operators and car accessory shops. Businesses are required to rent between two and three marked bays, a move aimed at supporting daily operations while preventing the abuse of public parking spaces.

According to MPAJ, 282 out of an estimated 500 eligible businesses have complied so far, putting the compliance rate at around 55%. The council said its Revenue Department had gone door-to-door to distribute application forms and remind operators that non-compliance could affect the renewal of their business licences.

A standard designated parking bay costs RM254.40 per month, while a 24-hour bay is priced at RM530. A RM50 processing fee applies to both new applications and renewals.

During weekdays, the bays are reserved for business use from 8am to 6.30pm. Outside these hours, including weekends and public holidays they are open to the public.

Some operators have welcomed the policy, saying dedicated parking makes it easier and safer to run their businesses. Others, however, feel the policy could be improved, calling for lower rental rates or the flexibility to rent additional bays, especially for larger or corner-lot premises.

Members of the public have also expressed support for the move, saying it helps prevent businesses from occupying multiple parking bays without paying and improves overall parking availability in busy commercial areas.

That said, compliance on the ground remains uneven. Checks by The Star in areas such as Pandan Indah and Pandan Perdana found several businesses still operating without designated bays. MPAJ said enforcement action would be rolled out in stages against those that have yet to comply.
