Toyota Harrier Goes Hybrid-Only in Malaysia: This Is Why

For years, the Toyota Harrier was the "bridge" for Malaysian buyers moving from mass-market SUVs to the premium segment. You could get the prestige of the Harrier badge for under RM280k by opting for the 2.0L Luxury variant.
But as of this week, that bridge has been burned.
With the launch of the 2026 Toyota Harrier 2.5 HEV (Hybrid), UMW Toyota Motor has officially delisted the 2.0L petrol engine from its website. The Harrier is now a Hybrid-only model in Malaysia.
The Price of Progress: RM289,000
The new 2.5 HEV is priced at RM289,000, which is a RM15,000 jump over the old 2.0L Luxury model (RM274,000). While a price hike is never fun, the "Big Switch" actually offers a massive jump in performance that the old base model simply couldn't touch.
2.0L Petrol vs. 2.5L Hybrid: What Changed?

Why Did Toyota Do It?
Toyota is clearly moving toward a "Multi-Pathway" electrification strategy in Malaysia. By removing the 2.0L engine, they are positioning the Harrier as a sophisticated, tech-forward alternative to European rivals like the BMW X1 or Mercedes GLA.
You aren’t just paying RM15k more for a battery; you’re getting 45 more horsepower, a significantly quieter cabin (thanks to the TNGA-K platform’s EV mode).

Inside, the driver is greeted by a 12.3-inch digital cockpit (a massive leap from the 2022 model’s 7-inch display) and a 10.5-inch color HUD. While it retains the digital rear-view mirror from the previous version, new premium touches like ventilated and heated front seats—previously missing from the 2.0L Luxury kit—solidify its status as a true premium contender.
To seal the deal, Toyota includes an 8-year unlimited mileage hybrid warranty, ensuring that going "all-in" on hybrid is a low-risk move for the owner.
The Verdict: Is the "Base" Harrier Missed?

While some may miss the lower entry price, the reality is that the 2.0L NA engine always felt a bit "underpowered" for a car of this stature. The 2.5L HEV finally gives the Harrier the effortless, silent "waft" that its elegant design deserves.
