Let’s be real, with global economic uncertainty and geopolitical tensions putting constant pressure on oil prices, watching the numbers tick up at the petrol pump is an absolute pain for our wallets.

But what if you could put a massive RM204 a month (or over RM2,400 a year) back into your bank account without changing where you drive, but simply how you drive?

According to the Malaysian Road Safety Research Institute (MIROS), adopting energy-efficient driving habits, also known as eco-driving, can slash your fuel expenses significantly if you travel between 1,000km and 2,000km a month.

Here is exactly how the math works out and how your current driving style is secretly bleeding you dry.

The Math: Subsidised vs. Unsubsidised Savings

MIROS Director-General Associate Professor Dr. Siti Zaharah Ishak broke down the numbers based on a typical light passenger vehicle or compact sedan (think a Proton Saga) that consumes about 6.6 litres per 100km.

Depending on what you pay at the pump, the monthly savings are pretty wild:

  • For Subsidised RON95 (RM1.99/litre): Practicing calm and consistent driving habits can comfortably shave RM13 to RM105 a month off your fuel bill.
  • For Unsubsidised Petrol (RM3.87/litre): If you are paying full market rates, the savings skyrocket from RM26 to a massive RM204 a month!

3 Bad Driving Habits Slashing Your Fuel Efficiency

Eco-driving is all about being prudent, calm, and consistent. In contrast, aggressive driving behaves like a vampire for your petrol tank.

Data from the United States Department of Energy shows exactly how much your bad road habits are costing you:

  • The "Stop-and-Go" Floor It: Constantly rushing to accelerate only to slam on your brakes late drops your fuel efficiency by 10% to 40% in heavy traffic.
  • The Highway Speeder: Tailgating and frequent, aggressive speed changes on the highway slash your efficiency by 15% to 30% at high speeds.
  • The Endless Idling: Leaving your engine running while stationary just to keep the aircon blasting while waiting for someone eats up fuel for absolutely no reason.

The Quick Fix: Drop Your Speed By Just 10km/h

Want an incredibly lazy way to start saving fuel tomorrow morning? Just lift your foot off the pedal slightly when cruising on the highway.

MIROS highlights that simply lowering your speed by 8km/h to 16km/h can provide an instant fuel savings of 7% to 14%.

Bonus Perk: Smoother driving doesn't just protect your wallet, it keeps you out of the workshop. Avoiding sudden acceleration and hard braking drastically reduces your risk of losing control or getting into a nasty rear-end collision. Plus, cruising at lower speeds gives you way more time to react to road emergencies.

Also a Bonus!: If you drive an EV, eco-driving applies to you too! The US EPA found that keeping your speed consistent and managing your aircon extends your battery range significantly.

You don't need a brand-new car to beat high fuel costs. By turning down the road aggression, dropping your highway speed just a touch, and practicing smooth acceleration, you can easily hand yourself a "bonus" of RM2,400 a year. Your wallet, and your passengers, will thank you.
