RM278k For A Honda?! 5 Reasons This Reborn Prelude Is WAY More Than Just An Expensive Civic

When Honda Malaysia officially pulled the covers off the brand-new, 6th-generation Prelude at KLIMS 2026, the collective gasp across MITEC wasn't just for its gorgeous looks. It was for that eye-watering price tag: RM278,000.
But here is the plot twist: it’s actually significantly lower than anticipated, considering this car is positioned above the legendary FL5 Civic Type R in Japan! Before you join the comment section pitchfork mob, you need to look under the skin of the BF1-generation Prelude. Honda didn't just slap a sleek 2-door body onto a standard commuter platform.
From secret race car genetics to hidden design Easter eggs, here are 5 reasons why the reborn Prelude is on a completely different level:
1. It carries genuine, track-ready Civic Type R hardware

If you think this car drives like a standard family sedan, think again. While the cab-forward profile looks unmistakably Civic from the nose to the A-pillar, its handling is pure track monster. Honda engineers straight-up raided the FL5 Civic Type R parts bin, equipping the Prelude with a dual-axis strut front suspension, a specialized Adaptive Damper System, and a high-performance Brembo brake system featuring massive 13.8-inch front rotors. Combined with uniform-rigidity driveshafts to suppress torque steer, this coupe is built to trace corners perfectly.
2. A smart 203 PS hybrid system that sips just 4.2L of fuel
Yes, it shares its Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD) hybrid bones with the Civic e:HEV, but it utilizes it like a true grand tourer. The 2.0-litre Atkinson-cycle engine primarily acts as a generator to feed a 1.05 kWh battery, which powers a front traction motor pushing 184 PS and 315 Nm of instant torque.
But when you clamp your foot down, the engine clutches directly into the wheels, bumping total system output to 203 PS (200 hp). It will do 0-100 km/h in 8.2 seconds, hit a top speed of 188 km/h, and remarkably consume just 4.2 litres of petrol per 100 km.
3. It debuts an 'S+ Shift' tech that simulates an 8-speed race car

How do you keep a highly advanced hybrid from feeling soulless? You invent S+ Shift Technology, making its Malaysian debut right here via a large dedicated button on the centre console.

This system precisely controls the hybrid motor to simulate the mechanical gear shifts of an 8-speed transmission. To make it a total sensory experience, it syncs with Active Sound Control (ASC) to pump roaring engine notes into the cabin on every simulated upshift and downshift.
4. There are literally zero external antennas to ruin its 'flex'

Honda designers were completely obsessive about keeping the car's flowing "Unlimited Glide" design lines completely clean and unbroken. Look closely at the roof line and the tailgate, there is no shark-fin antenna or plastic molding sticking out. Instead, they pulled off an elite engineering trick by integrating a custom glass-print radio antenna directly into the rear window pane.

Paired with flush outer door handles, a custom flat-bottom steering wheel with a 12 o’clock marker, and twin-five spoke 19-inch aluminum wheels housing bright blue Brembo calipers, this thing looks like pure luxury.
5. Driver-focused cockpit built for daily utility
Step inside the two-tone blue and white interior and you’ll immediately see this isn't just a copy-paste of a standard sedan cabin. The "Gliding Cockpit" has a distinctly premium layout featuring a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch freestanding touchscreen with Google Built-in, and an immersive 8-speaker Bose Premium Sound System. The center console has also been completely reworked, dropping the traditional shifter for a clean, futuristic push-button gear selector.

But the real highlight is the asymmetric front seat configuration. The driver’s seat is custom-contoured with high shoulders and aggressive bolstering to lock your body down through tight bends, while the passenger seat is tuned for effortless ingress/egress and pure lounge comfort.
Is it worth RM278k?

If you're looking at purely horsepower-per-ringgit specs, it's easy to dismiss it. But at RM278,000, the Prelude is a highly specialized, limited-vibe halo car that gives you Type R handling DNA, sleek grand tourer styling, and incredible daily hybrid efficiency, without ever needing to look for an EV charging station.
