Chery Chairman Apologises Over Malaysia Quality Issues, But What's Next?
![]()
Chery chairman and president Yin Tongyue has publicly acknowledged vehicle quality issues in Malaysia, revealing that he personally apologised to a Malaysian minister over the matter.
Speaking at the World Intelligent Connected Vehicles Conference (WICV) on October 21, Yin said Chery had acted quickly to take responsibility for its customers.
His remarks come amid renewed scrutiny of the Chery Omoda 5 rear axle issue, which has prompted a recall involving 8,878 vehicles and an investigation by the Road Transport Department (JPJ). But what happens after the apology?
- Chery chairman Yin Tongyue acknowledged vehicle quality issues in Malaysia and said he had apologised to a Malaysian minister.
- The latest Omoda 5 rear axle issue has led to a recall covering 8,878 vehicles and a JPJ investigation.
- Chery's preliminary findings point to potentially insufficient welding strength at certain rear axle joints.
- What's next? Recall progress, JPJ's final findings and Chery's preventive measures remain key questions.
What Did Chery's Chairman Say?

Yin said he had personally apologised to a Malaysian minister earlier that day. He also stressed that international expansion should not be about chasing quick profits, but building a sustainable presence in overseas markets.
He emphasised respect for local laws and regulations, responsibility towards customers and the need to avoid overconfidence when expanding internationally.
Possible Welding Issue Identified In Omoda 5
In an October 11 statement issued in China, Chery identified potentially insufficient welding strength at certain rear axle trailing-arm joints in the affected production batch.
The manufacturer indicated that the welds could separate under extreme conditions. It also initiated precautionary checks involving vehicles from the same batch in China and other relevant markets.
Why The Latest Omoda 5 Recall Matters
The latest incident occurred in Johor Bahru, where an Omoda 5 was seen with its rear axle detached. As Carz previously reported, it raised questions about a similar incident in 2024.
JPJ subsequently suspended the original Omoda 5's Vehicle Type Approval (VTA), while Chery announced a recall covering 8,878 Omoda 5 C and H vehicles. This is the recall population, not 8,878 confirmed failures.
The 2024 recall involved 600 vehicles and was linked to a welding equipment calibration issue. However, an identical root cause has not been established for both incidents. Read our earlier comparison of the two recall campaigns for more context.
What Happens Next For Malaysian Owners?
Chery has begun inspections and component replacements for affected vehicles while cooperating with JPJ's investigation. Three questions now matter most:
- Recall progress: How quickly will affected vehicles be inspected and repaired?
- Investigation: What will JPJ's final findings reveal?
- Prevention: What additional safeguards will Chery introduce?
Owners can refer to our Omoda 5 recall guide for practical information on the campaign and next steps.
Yin's apology is an important acknowledgement, but restoring confidence will depend on transparent findings, timely corrective action and continued support for affected customers.
For Malaysian Omoda 5 owners, the real measure of accountability is what happens after the apology.
Why did Chery's chairman apologise over Malaysia's quality issues?
How many Chery Omoda 5 vehicles are being recalled?
What caused the latest Omoda 5 rear axle issue?
What should affected Omoda 5 owners do?
