ECRL Vs Express Bus: Is Saving Hours Worth Paying More?
![]()
RM125 for ECRL to Kota Bharu, or around RM68 for an express bus? The train could save travellers several hours, but is the time saved worth paying extra?
With the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) targeting passenger operations from 12 December 2026, subject to regulatory and safety approvals, express bus operators could soon face serious competition, particularly with a 30% introductory rail fare discount.
- ECRL fares: Gombak to Kota Bharu starts at RM125 for Transit and RM147 for Express.
- Travel time: ECRL Express is projected to take about four hours, compared with roughly eight to nine hours by bus.
- Bus advantage: Advertised express bus fares can be considerably cheaper, with some services around RM68 or less.
- Launch promotion: A 30% first-month ECRL discount could bring the RM125 starting Transit fare to an illustrative RM87.50 for eligible passengers.
ECRL Vs Express Bus: How Big Is The Price Difference?
According to Malaysia Rail Link (MRL), as reported by Bernama, one-way ECRL economy fares from Gombak to Kota Bharu will start at RM125 for Transit and RM147 for Express, subject to dynamic pricing.
Express buses are already competing on affordability. Online booking platforms have advertised TBS-Kota Bharu journeys from around RM44, with some services listed at approximately RM67.80. These are indicative fares, not confirmed bookings for the same travel date.
| Comparison | ECRL Transit | ECRL Express | Express Bus |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starting one-way fare | RM125 | RM147 | From ~RM44* |
| Journey time | ~5 hours | ~4 hours | ~8-9 hours |
| Departure | Gombak | Gombak | TBS / others |
| Pricing | Dynamic | Dynamic | Operator/date dependent |
*Bus fares and journey times are indicative and may vary. ECRL times are projected station-to-station journeys. Departure terminals differ, and prices have not been matched for the same travel date.
At RM67.80, an express bus ticket would cost RM57.20 less than ECRL's starting Transit fare. But the train could cut several hours off the journey.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke has announced the 30% economy-class discount for ECRL's first month of operations.
At the illustrative RM87.50 promotional fare, Transit would cost just RM19.70 more than the RM67.80 bus example. Eligible passengers may also qualify for separate concession fares, although these cannot be stacked with the launch promotion.
Four Hours By Train, But What About Door-To-Door Travel?
A four-hour train ride doesn't mean you'll reach your destination in four hours.
ECRL passengers still need to reach Gombak station, then arrange onward transport after arriving in Kota Bharu. Those heading to places such as Bachok or Pasir Mas may have another journey ahead.
Express buses could remain more convenient for passengers whose departure and arrival terminals better match their actual travel plans. Service frequency and departure times will matter too, especially once ECRL's final passenger timetable becomes available.
Should Express Bus Operators Be Worried?
Yes, particularly on routes where ECRL competes directly for passengers. But that doesn't mean express buses are heading for extinction.
The impact could differ depending on what travellers value most.
Importantly, ECRL has yet to begin commercial passenger operations. Any impact on express bus demand remains uncertain, and potential feeder services should not be mistaken for confirmed operator plans.
For bus operators, the challenge may be less about matching the train's speed and more about offering better value, convenient terminals and wider route coverage.
So, Train Or Bus To Kota Bharu?
ECRL could win over travellers who value time, while express buses may continue appealing to those who prioritise affordability and accessibility.
The real comparison isn't simply RM125 versus RM68. It's the total cost, total travel time and convenience of getting from your doorstep to your actual destination.
For operators, the challenge isn't necessarily beating the train on speed. It's giving passengers compelling reasons to keep choosing the bus.
What about you? Would you pay more to save several hours, or stick with the cheaper express bus?
