Mazda Motor Corporation proudly announced today that they have achieved a significant milestone in their history: the production of over two million rotary engine vehicles.

The rotary engine is a unique power plant characterised by its triangular rotors that generate power through rotational movement. Mazda's journey with rotary engines began in 1967 with the introduction of the Mazda Cosmo Sport (Mazda 110S), marking their pioneering venture into this innovative technology.

Over the years, Mazda dedicated itself to perfecting rotary engines, continuously improving their performance, fuel efficiency, and durability. Mazda remained the sole automaker to mass-produce rotary engines for an extended period.

In June of this year, Mazda reignited its rotary engine production after an eleven-year hiatus since discontinuing the Mazda RX-8 in 2012. They are now preparing to release their twelfth rotary engine vehicle, the Mazda MX-30 e-SKYACTIV R-EV, in the upcoming days. However, the rotary power plant in this model would serve as a range extender that would be used to charge the battery that would power the drive motors.

According to Takeshi Mukai, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer at Mazda, "The rotary engine holds a special place in Mazda's history, embodying its 'never-stop challenging spirit.' This technology has garnered love and admiration from customers worldwide, and just like them, Mazda is equally thrilled to see it make a comeback.”

He also extended heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported Mazda’s journey, particularly the loyal customers who have embraced rotary engine vehicles. Moving forward, Mazda would remain committed to passing on this 'never-stop challenging spirit' by offering vehicles that deliver an exhilarating driving experience, even in this age of electrification.
