Malaysia F1 Return: Sepang's 50-50 Chances And What Happens Next

Malaysia's chances of bringing Formula 1 back to Sepang permanently remain 50-50, according to Sepang International Circuit (SIC) CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif.

But the next major step is already taking shape. SIC is preparing a feasibility study for Cabinet consideration in November 2026, potentially bringing Malaysia closer to a decision on reviving the Malaysian Grand Prix.

So, after the excitement of October's F1 return, what's standing between Sepang and a permanent spot on the calendar?

TL;DR: MALAYSIA'S F1 COMEBACK
  • 50-50: SIC's assessment of Malaysia's chances of hosting F1 again.
  • November 2026: Target for presenting the feasibility study to Cabinet.
  • Under review: Hosting costs, economic impact and transport readiness.
  • Not confirmed: A permanent Malaysian GP, hosting agreement or return date.

Why November Matters For Malaysia's F1 Return

SIC is gathering information through discussions with government agencies and industry players to prepare its feasibility study, according to Bernama's 26 October report.

The findings will help the government assess whether Malaysia should pursue a return to the Formula 1 calendar.

Azhan Shafriman acknowledged that the outcome remains uncertain.

"For now, it is still 50-50. It's difficult for me to say yes or no (whether it will happen or not)."

Importantly, November is the targeted presentation period, not a confirmed date for Cabinet approval. Even with government support, a permanent return would still require commercial discussions with Formula 1.

Sepang Hosted F1 Again. So What's The Problem?

From 2 to 4 October 2026, Sepang hosted the Bahrain Grand Prix after the event was relocated amid the conflict in West Asia. It marked F1's return to the Malaysian circuit for the first time since 2017.

However, hosting a relocated race is very different from securing a permanent Malaysian Grand Prix. October's event benefited from a special arrangement under which Bahrain covered the F1 hosting-rights fees. A regular Malaysian GP would require Malaysia to negotiate its own commitments.

Then there's the financial question.

THE FINANCIAL EQUATION
RM950m
Estimated economic impact
October's Bahrain GP at Sepang
RM300m+
Estimated annual hosting cost
Potential permanent Malaysian GP
These figures represent different measures and should not be interpreted as a direct profit-versus-cost comparison. Economic impact is not government revenue or event profit.

The real challenge is whether Malaysia can consistently justify the cost of hosting F1, rather than relying on the success of a single race weekend.

Transport Readiness Is Another Major Test

Money isn't SIC's only consideration. Traffic management and public transport readiness are also part of the feasibility study.

Ahead of October's race, Malaysia Airports warned of limited parking at KLIA, with more than 200,000 spectators expected over three days. Visitors were encouraged to use rail and shuttle services to ease congestion around the airport and Sepang.

It was a reminder that bringing F1 back permanently involves more than having a race-ready circuit. Malaysia also needs reliable transport arrangements capable of handling major crowds year after year.

What Happens Next For The Malaysian Grand Prix?

There are three key stages before a permanent Malaysian GP can become a reality.

1
SIC completes its feasibility study
Assessing economic impact, hosting viability, traffic management and public transport.
2
Cabinet considers the proposal
Presentation targeted for November 2026. No approval date has been confirmed.
3
Potential negotiations with Formula 1
Commercial terms and calendar availability would need to be addressed if Malaysia proceeds.

As Carz previously reported, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had discussed a potential permanent return with F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali.

Now, SIC is preparing the assessment needed to help the government decide whether to take that ambition further.

So, is F1 returning to Malaysia permanently? Not yet. Sepang has proved it can host the championship again. The bigger challenge is making a long-term Malaysian Grand Prix financially and logistically sustainable.

With SIC's assessment still at 50-50, November could offer the clearest indication yet of where Malaysia's F1 comeback stands.

Malaysia F1 Return: Frequently Asked Questions

Is Formula 1 officially returning to Malaysia?

No. As of 27 October 2026, a permanent Malaysian Grand Prix has not been confirmed. SIC is preparing a feasibility study for Cabinet consideration before any further decisions are made.

When will Malaysia decide whether to bring F1 back?

SIC aims to present its feasibility study to the Cabinet in November 2026. However, no specific date for a final government decision has been announced.

Why are Malaysia's F1 comeback chances only 50-50?

SIC CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif has described the prospects as 50-50. The government must assess economic viability, hosting costs, traffic management and public transport readiness before deciding whether to pursue a permanent return.

How much could it cost Malaysia to host F1 annually?

Previous estimates have placed the annual hosting commitment at RM300 million or more. The eventual cost would depend on commercial arrangements and other event-related expenses.

When was the last Formula 1 race held at Sepang?

Sepang hosted the relocated Bahrain Grand Prix from 2 to 4 October 2026. Before that, the circuit last staged the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2017.
