Future Line-Up Of Hyundai Models In Malaysia Can Be CKD, New SUV In 2022
The new generation Elantra and Sonata models are now fully imported (CBU) from South Korea and distributor Hyundai Sime Darby Motors (HSDM) plans to change that plus offer more locally assembled models.
Manufacturers of locally assembled or CKD models are given incentives by the government and hence can be priced lower compared to fully imported sourcing.
Currently, only the Santa Fe model is locally assembled and SD Motors, the parent company of HSDM, confirms that more CKD Hyundai projects are being proposed as the product line-up expands in the future.
HSDM says with the commencement of Hyundai Motor Company’s Asean manufacturing hub in Jakarta, Indonesia, the supply of right-hand drive parts and components can be made available and thus support the Malaysian assembly activity.
An SUV model is being planned for CKD and is scheduled for introduction in 2022.
Hyundai is also set to unveil its new electric vehicle called the Ioniq 5 next week. The automaker also said it is exploring the possibility of manufacturing EVs at the new Indonesian production facility.
