- Volkswagen ID.Buzz To Be Revitalized With Self-Driving Tech
Volkswagen ID.Buzz or famously known as the VW Kombi is getting rejuvenated and elevated with a state of the art technology.
Set to roam the streets in 2025, the VW Kombi will be leading and also will be Volkswagen Group’s first vehicle to feature the autonomous driving system.
In accordance with the aforementioned year, Volkswagen has plans to unleash the commercial vehicle of the VW Kombi on the streets of Europe. It is to be introduced with a self-driving system for traffic usage as robotaxis and autonomous delivery vans.
The VW Kombi incorporates a pure electric vehicle architecture called Modular Electric Drive Matrix (MEB). It is the same architecture that can be seen in the Volkswagen ID.3 hatch and ID.4 crossover.
It is stated by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles that the ID.Buzz is closely inspired by the design of the concept that was unveiled in 2018. The ID.Buzz concept that was teased had a longer wheelbase, rear barn doors, and a repurposed interior.
A start-up company known as Argo AI was the entity responsible for developing the self-driving technology that will be installed in the commercial variant of the VW Kombi.
This was made possible with a US$ 1 billion (RM 4.06 billion) investment by Volkswagen into the start-up, which resulted in the creation of the Autonomous Intelligent Driving division of the Argo AI company.
Albeit the self-driving variant will not be in the market anytime soon, a version of the ID.Buzz or VW Kombi in a form driven by humans however, is set to make its debut in 2022.
