Tesla models have made it to the list of the top-10 most popular electric vehicles in the United States over the past three years, with total combined sales of 430,000 units, according to a recent analysis from BuyAutoInsurance.com.

The Kogod School of Business' 2021 Made in America Auto Index lists the Tesla Model 3 in the third position, Model S and Model Y in a shared fifth, as well as Model X in the eighth.

By far, The Tesla Model 3 was named as the best-selling EV in the States during the period mentioned above, with estimated unit sales of just under 300,000. The Model 3 became immensely popular because of the lower price tag, USD$ 35,000 (RM 146142.50), surpassing the Nissan Leaf to become the world's all-time best-selling plug-in electric car.

The factor of the factory location was said to be the main reason why Tesla dominates the American-made ranking. But, we believe there’s more to this than just the stated reason. For the record, Tesla has all the models it sells in the United States made at the Fremont plant in California and even used local suppliers for the majority of components it uses in its electric vehicles. That could be another reason for its popularity!

For example, 65 percent of the parts used to make the Tesla Model 3 (Long Range, Standard Range, and Performance) are sourced from the United States and Canada. The Model 3 is outranked only by the manual Ford Mustang GT 5.0L (77 percent, no. 1 in the ranking) and the Chevrolet Corvette Stingray (72 percent, no. 2). The Tesla Model S and Model Y score 60 percent each, while the Model X has 55 percent content from the US and Canada

Tesla also was ranked first with an average of 81 percent in the TDC index, with the famous Model 3 being on the top as the model with the highest TDC (82.5). Followed by the Model S and Model Y (80 each) and Model X (77.5).

It surpasses other popular models such as the Chevrolet Bolt EV, the Nissan Leaf, the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the BMW i3s, the Kia Niro EV and Lexus UX that share the 98th spot with 0 percent and 1 TDC each.
