Mazda CX-50 Revealed - Rugged Design With More Interior Space!

Mazda has revealed another masterpiece, the Mazda CX-50, a midsize sports utility vehicle (SUV) that competes with cars like the Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 in the North American market.

This model, however, is nothing like its sibling, the CX-5. While the CX-5 is a little bit cramped, the Mazda CX-50, on the other hand, appears to be slightly larger, offering more interior space for the user!

Design-wise, we must say that this new model looks very rugged with its chunky flared fenders, squared-off wheel arches and lots of black plastic body cladding. Its front end continues to wear Mazda’s signature large grille and sharp headlights with vertical corner air inlets and a slim horizontal strip as well as the integrated accent lighting.

At the rear, there’s large vents and two-piece taillights that strengthen the rugged image of the CX-50.

Its roof rails, B-pillars and door jambs have also been strengthened to store items on top of the CX-50, adding to the car’s ability-to-go-anywhere nature.

Interior-wise, the dashboard has been accentuated with vertical air vents, including two on either side of the instrument cluster. Also, you can find a freestanding infotainment screen and a digital instrument display sandwiched between two analogue dials.

This time, Mazda comes out with blended materials seats that have been inspired by outdoor gear to portray its macho side. Meanwhile, the boot has been designed to enable outdoor activities. A new terracotta interior colour option is available, along with a panoramic sunroof – a first for the brand.

Mazda has also confirmed that the CX-50 will get standard all-wheel drive and Mazda Intelligent Drive Select (Mi-Drive) with off-road-specific modes. Rumours have it; this model is based on Skyactiv-Vehicle Architecture as the Mazda 3 and CX-30. But, whether or not it will ride on the same torsion beam rear suspension as those cars remains a secret.

The Mazda CX-50 runs on a 2.5 litre naturally-aspirated and turbocharged Skyactiv-G petrol engine mated to a standard six-speed automatic gearbox. Outputs remain unknown but expect them to be similar to the 3 and CX-30 – 186 hp and 252 Nm of torque for the NA mill and 227 hp and 420 Nm for the turbo. A hybrid powertrain – tipped to be derived from joint venture partner Toyota – will also be made available later.

The CX-50 will begin production in January 2022 at the Mazda Toyota Manufacturing (MTM) plant in Huntsville, Alabama. The car will be the first Mazda model to be built at the facility, churning out the smaller Toyota Corolla Cross for the region.
