- The Alpha5: A Comeback Long-Awaited, A Delorean In An Electric Vehicle Form
Making a comeback after 40 years, DeLorean, the iconic American carmaker presents a brand-new car, the Alpha5 electric sports saloon.
Limited to just 88 units, the Alpha5 is slated to make its grand debut at the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance this coming August 18.
Details of the Alpha5 EV are sparse, but fret not, a little teaser has been divulged by the automaker ahead of its return.
First and foremost, the new Alpha5 is penned by the Italian design house Italdesign, whose founder, Giorgetto Giugiaro, fashioned the origami form of the original DMC-12.
Resembling its iconic predecessor from the ‘Back to the Future’ franchise, the new DeLorean Alpha5 is also seen with gullwing doors.
The side profile further pops with a set of turbine-style wheels for better aerodynamics and flared wheel arches.
Then, its front end gets a sculpted hood with sleek LED light bars acting as the headlights in a modern tribute to the DMC-12 boxy headlights.
Flipping to the rear, it is dominated by the very futuristic lightbar style tail lights, along with the illuminated DeLorean logo and the diffuser section.
Other than that, contrasting the DMC-12, the new Alpha5 has an overall curved and smoothed out silhouette, which provides a low coefficient drag figure of 0.23.
Transitioning inside, the new Alpha5 has a rather minimalist interior, which complements the sleek and clean outlook the EV is going for.
Located on the dashboard is a wraparound widescreen driver’s display and a vertical infotainment system, along with what appears to be two large cup holders.
As far as spaciousness goes, the cabin can fit a total of four people including the person sitting behind the wheel.
Performance-wise, the new Alpha5 EV is said to have a battery pack larger than 100 kWh, which provides over 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge.
It can surge from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3 seconds and has a top speed of 250 km/h, and as a nod to the movie, a dash from 0 to 142 km/h (0 to 88 mph), it does in 4.35 seconds.
In short, the new DeLorean Alpha5 embraces the future with its electric drivetrain and modern design, and hopefully it will be a success story despite its lack of time travel gadgetry.
