- The U.S. Navy's F/A-18 Super Hornet Crashed, The Pilot Killed
A US Navy Boeing F/A-18E Super Hornet fighter plane crashed recently in southern California's desert, killing the pilot.
The plane crashed about 2:30 p.m. in the Trona area of the Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, about 236 miles southeast of the air station, according to the navy.
The pilot died in the crash, and the navy is awaiting notification of his next of kin before revealing his identity.
The cause of the crash has not been revealed in detail, but it is certain that no other aircraft or civilians on the ground were also involved.
Lemoore serves as the headquarters for Commander Strike Fighter Wing Pacific and Commander Joint Strike Fighter Wing, and it is home to 16 active Strike Fighter squadrons.
The fighter jet is the same type of aircraft that Tom Cruise 'flew' in Top Gun: Maverick.
With cameras in the cockpit, Tom Cruise was seen 'flying' the plane alongside an experienced US Navy pilot who actually flew it.
However, before boarding the F/A-18 Super Hornet, Tom Cruise and the other actors went through the entire Aviation Survival Training Curriculum.
