The Ministry of Finance (MOF) has approved an additional RM130 million allocations on September 13 for the periodic maintenance of pavements on federal roads throughout the country.

The allocations have been offered to contractors in Peninsular Malaysia through 180 works worth RM 113 million.

Meanwhile, for Malaysian Borneo States (Sabah, Sarawak & Labuan) contractors will be given RM 17 million through 17 projects.

According to Senior Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, approximately 60% of federal roads in the country have reached the end of their service lives and require repair costs of approximately RM3 billion.

Given the high costs involved, he stated that the ministry was negotiating with concessionaires and gathering feedback from all ministries to plan for the construction and repair of the roads that had expired.

"That's why we want to work with several parties and our approach is diverse, but the important thing is that we have to build new roads so that the comfort and safety of the users is guaranteed," he told reporters recently on Thursday (Sept 29).

The work implementation is expected to be completed within a month and a half, or by November.
