The Kuala Terengganu bypass, which connects Kuala Ibai and Kampung Durian Burung nearby, has finally been opened to an estimated 70,000+ road users after a three-year wait.

According to Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof, the 5.8 kilometre road might ease traffic on the city's Jalan Persekutuan, particularly during rush hours, significant holidays, and school breaks.

“This project will also increase the level of accessibility and mobility of users of the east coast and be able to (energise) the economy in the Kuala Terengganu area, especially for the tourism sector as well as small and medium industries,” he told reporters at the opening of the bypass yesterday, Bernama reported.

According to Fadillah, the bypass originally cost RM250mil and was approved by the Federal Government in the 3rd Rolling Plan (RP3) of the 10th Malaysia Plan (10MP).

He said that the cost of acquiring the land tripled, raising the sum to RM384.3mil.

“Work on the project that stretches almost 6km started in 2016 and should not have taken so long to complete. But the construction went through various challenges including the Covid-19 pandemic,” he said.

At the event, Fadillah also gave the letter of acceptance to the contractor who had been awarded contracts by the Public Works Department for three projects in Kelantan, including the Kota Baru to Kuala Krai highway project and the Central Spine Road (CSR) Kuala Krai to Sungai Lakit bridge.

According to him, the Kota Baru to Kuala Krai highway is 10 kilometres long, and the CSR project entails the building of an 11.05-kilometer road with a contract value of RM317.5 million. The CSR Sungai Lakit bridge to Gua Musang is 20 kilometres long (RM262mil).

Fadillah also announced that the 52.55-kilometer rural road construction project from Kampung Mat Daling, Jerantut to Kampung Pasir Raja, Dungun, had just begun and was anticipated to be finished in three years.
