This electric Volkswagen office chair is both driveable and fully-loaded!

The folks over at Volkswagen have perhaps shown off one of the most complex and coolest office furniture ever built. Indeed, what you see here is an electric-powered office chair that thinks it’s an actual car. That’s because it not only has a proper electric propulsion unit fitted, it’s also brimmed with numerous car-like features all around.

This one-off chair, conceived by the German brand’s Commercial Vehicles arm in Norway, aims to bring car-like functionality to the office. To that end, it’s been fitted with an electric motor plus removeable battery system, the former able to proper this office furniture up to 20 KM/H over an estimated distance of 12 KM too.

The chair rides on aluminium wheels adorned with the VW logo. It also sports a pair of LED headlights on the armrests that are akin in shape to those seen on the VW ID range of EVs, and it even features a multi-colored party mode. On top of which comes a pair of turn signals at the back, so that you can rightfully inform anyone tailing you in the office that you plan on making a turn.

The seat itself looks like it was lifted straight out of one of VW’s many car models, offering height adjustment plus heating function. On top of all that, there’s also a traditional three-point seatbelt present.

All functions can be accessed and toggled via a control panel on the right armrest whereas the left armrest gets a car-like infotainment touchscreen display that’s  also connected to an audio system. The screen also doubles up as a display for the rear-view camera, which works in tandem with a set of parking sensors too. Finally, there is a USB slot for charging your device as you drive about – just like any road-going VW.

Another car-like feature present in this motorised office chair is a usable boot, though its usefulness and practicality are questionable – it has a small 5-litre capacity. Want to lug more stuff around? Fret not as the builders of this chair also incorporated a trailer hitch at the back, though its actual towing capacity is anyone’s guess.

This is undoubtedly one of the more overengineered pieces of furniture ever devised, but it will sadly remain as a one-off for now as VW has no plans to produce it en masse anytime soon. Still, if you happen to be in Norway, you can ‘test-drive’ this chair at selected VW locations throughout said Scandinavian nation over the next few months.
