Besut's flood crisis is worsening, with all routes leading to the district restricted to all cars since Monday.

Datuk Ahmad Izram Osman, director of the Fire and Rescue Department's (JBPM) fire safety section, said the number of flood evacuees in Besut, at 5,492, was among the highest in Terengganu.

"All of the evacuees, from 1,506 families, are finding shelter at 83 temporary relief centres," he told reporters after Terengganu JBPM deputy director Mohd Khairiri Mat Resad @Arshad briefed him on the state's flood situation.

Earlier, Ahmad Izram conducted an aerial reconnaissance over the Hulu Terengganu district, where numerous locations, including schools and residential areas, were inundated.

A similar survey of the Besut district, however, was unable to be carried out due to inclement weather.

According to him, the hilly geography of Besut made it difficult for security forces to approach specific places, such as rural communities.

The team is currently on the ground with 367 officers and staff, including 81 trainees from the Wakaf Tapai Fire Academy.

The Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team (SMART) and East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) provided two lorries for each district, in addition to five additional vehicles provided by the JBPM headquarters in Putrajaya, he said.
