900 Public EV Chargers So Far, Target 10,000 Public Chargers By 2025!

Based on the screen capture of the public EV charging infrastructure available in Malaysia as of 2nd December 2022 by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) and Ministry of Transport (MOT), there are 900 public charging stations available now.

This is a far cry from the targeted 10,000 EV charging stations target to be achieved by 2025, just over 2 years from now. Of the 900 public EV chargers online, 791 are of the AC type while only 109 are the much sought after DC variant.

From the slide, we can also see that the public EV charging facilities are still lacking badly in most states. States with substantial number of EV charger population are Kuala Lumpur with 239 (227 AC and 12 DC chargers), Selangor with 337 (296 AC and 41 DC), Johor with 88 (72 AC and 16 DC) and Pulau Pinang with 72 (67 AC and 5 DC).

Other states meanwhile are still way behind and require substantial effort from all parties soon in order to move forward to achieve the target. Melaka has 27 chargers (15 AC and 12 DC), Negeri Sembilan has 19 (13 AC and 6 DC), Putrajaya 5 (5 AC and 0 DC), Perak 34 (28 AC and 6 DC), Pahang 22 (17 AC and 5 DC), Terengganu 4 (4 AC and 0 DC), Kelantan 1 (1 AC and 0 DC), Kedah 22 (20 AC and 2 DC), Sabah 3 (2 AC and 1 DC), Sarawak 27 (24 AC and 3 DC) and Perlis with 0 public EV charging facilities.

Off all these public chargers listed, 28% are situated in malls, 15% are in car showrooms, 12% at Petrol stations, 9% at hotels, 9% at offices, 8% along highways, 5% at residential buildings, 5% at recreational centres, 4% at F&B outlets and the balance 15% scattered elsewhere. More chargers are needed along highways, offices and F&B outlets in order to actually make EV ownership more accessible to the masses.

On another note, the electric car sales have been on a steep upward rise where in 2021 257 cars were registered compared to 67 in 2020 equating to 1860 electric cars as of 2021 on Malaysian roads. The national target is 15% total industry volume (TIV) for EV and hybrid by 2030, and 38% TIV by 2040. For this growth to happen the public charging infrastructure would have to drastically be put in hyperdrive with contribution required from private and government sectors alike.
