Confirmed: Toyota GR Models and BZ4X EV Coming To Malaysia in 2023
UMW Toyota Motor (UMWT) looks set to close its 2022 business year on a high. In a press statement issued earlier today, the firm has successfully delivered 90,595 units of both Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Malaysia between Jan and Nov this year, and said figure is expected to rise further with Dec’s figures.
Besides that, UMWT also confirmed several key plans for 2023 in regards to its model line-up expansion starting with its GR performance model line-up.
Firstly, the firm confirmed two new additions coming, those being the GR 86 sports coupe and the GR Corolla hot hatch. Alongside those two, UMWT is also set to add a new variant of the existing GR Supra sports coupe primed with a 6-speed manual transmission setup.
Replacing the previous generation GT86 model, the new second-gen GR86 sports coupe is set to woo driving enthusiasts seeking a stylish, lightweight and agile performance machine that can be driven daily. Powering the GR86 is a new and larger 2.4-litre ‘Boxer’ 4-cyl mill with 232 HP (235 PS) and 250 NM that’s sent to the rear wheels either through a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission options.
Having made its sensational debut in Thailand recently, the GR Corolla hot hatch is set to follow up from the GR Yaris rally rep that UMWT previously offered. The larger hot hatch based on the Corolla hatch shares a similar 1.6-litre turbocharged 3-cyl mill as found in the GR Yaris, but with a higher state-of-tune to output 300 HP (304 PS) and 370 NM. Drive goes to all four wheels via a GT-Four all-wheel-drive (AWD) suite, which can be paired to either a 6-speed manual and automatic transmission.
As for the GR Supra, the addition of the 6-speed manual transmission variant is a much-welcomed move, especially amongst driving enthusiasts with the means. Those keen on rowing their own gears while taming the GR Supra’s manic 3.0-litre turbocharged in-line 6-cyl mill, which delivers 382 HP (397 PS) and 500 NM to the rear wheels, need not wait long to acquire this experience.
Performance models aside, UMWT is also set to join the rapidly growing local electric vehicles (EVs) market space by introducing the BZ4X crossover SUV. Recently debuted in both the Thailand and Indonesian markets with two differing specification and after-sales incentives, its arrival into Malaysia was first speculated following sightings of DC fast-chargers being installed at UMWT’s headquarters.
Details surrounding specifications and variants, as well as both price and tentative launch dates, all remain uncertain for now, but expect these details to surface in the weeks and months leading up to each model’s respective launches. We will keep a close eye on this, so check in from time to time for updates right here at CariCarz.com.
