The Minister of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change, YB Tuan Nik Nazmi bin Nik Ahmad today officiated the Gentari EV Charging Station at Bangi Golf Resort and officially handed over the EV Charging System Public Energy Distribution License by the Energy Commission to EV Connection Sdn. Bhd.

According to Nik Nazmi, the Prime Minister is committed to reinvigorate the national economy and improve the quality of life of the people, while his ministry, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change will focus on the exploration of new economic fields or sources such as renewable energy or the development of green economic chains.

This is also in line with the efforts to reduce the country's carbon footprint through energy transition measures, where the focus is on the implementation of 3D (Digitalisation, Decentralization and Decarbonisation). This energy transition effort is crucial as this sector contributes to about 80% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in Malaysia.

Nik Nazmi also acknowledged that the energy transition effort to be implemented requires support from various parties, especially the private sector. Therefore, the joint venture effort between Syarikat Gentari Sdn. Bhd. (a PETRONAS subsidiary) and EV Connection Sdn. Bhd. (EVC) in developing this EV charging infrastructure needs to be further expanded so that it will accelerate the transition to EV usage.

According to him further, in an effort to ensure EV chargers development in this country is safe and complies with the highest safety standards available, the Energy Commission will conduct regulatory checks based on its legal provision under the Electricity Supply Act 1990 (Act 447). The commission has published the "Guide on Electric Vehicle Charging System (EVCS)" as a reference document for all parties dabbling in the development of public charging facilities and potentially explore the "vehicle to grid" integration aspect to support the country's energy transition efforts.

Nik Nazmi added further that all parties involved in developing EV charging infrastructure have to comply with the guidelines to ensure public safety. One of the efforts the EV charging solution needs to do is obtain a public energy distribution license from the Energy Commission as has been done by Syarikat EV Connection Sdn. Bhd.

Meanwhile Shah Yang Razalli, the acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Green Mobility Officer Gentari Sdn Bhd says that “In Malaysia, Gentari-EVC's public fast charging infrastructure is the only service that offers a kilowatt-hour (kWh) equivalent pricing mechanism. This mechanism will only charge a fee depending on the "amount of kilowatts" used compared to the existing system everywhere which is payment based on the length of time it takes to charge an electric vehicle".

He goes on to add that the EV charging stations at X Park Sunway Serene and Bangi Golf Resort are the first charging hubs in Malaysia to be properly licensed by the Energy Commission.

The Gentari kilowatt-hour (kWh) charging rates for the AC chargers are set at RM0.55 per/kW while the DC chargers go for RM1 per/kW for the 120kW chargers and RM1.20 per/kW for the 350kW ones.
