Mazda 'Solid-State' EV Patent Uncovered - Could This Be The Gamechanger It Needs?
It's not much of a hidden secret that the good guys at Mazda are way behind in the EV game right next to the greats at Toyota. Termed the conti of the JDM world, with the EV boom since 2022 and 2023 where the world automotive player has been churning out EVs and sharing never ending updates with regard to the latest and greatest in electrification. Up to date the kings of the rotary world have so far only put up two models with electrons flowing through it, the BEV MX-30 with a more then desirable range and the upcoming PHEV CX-60.
Now, the last thing you should do is disregard Mazda from the game, as The Drive just uncovered this sleeping giant still has some bag of tricks as it uncovered what seems to be the patent for a small EV with the likes of the Mazda 3 which has been around since 2003.
Based on the technical drawings you see here, you might be confused on how this can be an EV, but look closer and you would notice a small crevice intended for the special battery that would eventually power this sedan. This tiny battery system has so far never been seen in any EVs on our roads today.
From what we can say, it's for sure some form of solid-state battery pack but no details are divulged on its existence or maker. If this is materialised, it will for surely be lighter then any conventional battery packs in the market. Lets just hope it has the range to back it up finally.
Furthermore from the drawings, we are able to see the compact sedan is designed to be front wheel drive, however some sources of The Drive shared that its patent states that a rear motor can be included turning this into a all-wheel drive EV. In a recent mid term management update presentation, Mazda had shared some creative new designs including an EV which looks like a small roadster taking cues from the MX5.
Now whether or not this design will materialise is still a mystery, having said that we do hope it does as Mazda really needs to pull all the stops to push itself forward to be on par with the rest in the electrification game.
