MIROS Advises Public To Practise Defensive Driving On Downhill and Corner Routes

Recently, local news outlet Berita Harian reported the tragic loss of seven passengers on a tourism van which occurred at the infamous Genting Highlands-Kuala Lumpur downhill route.

The investigation into the incident that led to the mishap revealed that the driver of the van handled the vehicle improperly whilst entering the corner and ramping over the intersection.

Therefore, the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS) advises the general public to exercise defensive driving techniques when travelling downhill and through corners.

Driving carefully is essential to maintain a safe distance between vehicles and to practise the proper braking technique when travelling through hazardous route, according to MIROS' Acting Director General, Azhar Hamzah.

He also emphasised the significance of performing vehicle maintenance, particularly when it comes to crucial components like tyres and brakes.  In the meantime, users should always wear a helmet and seat belt to lower the risk of serious injuries in the event of an accident.

Last but not least, drivers are reminded to follow the law and always abide by the set speed limit, be sensitive to safety messages delivered along the route such as warnings of curves areas, the existence of other speed reduction features such as speed humps, transverse bars, and notices regarding the use of facilities like an emergency escape ramp.
