- Report: Volkswagen ID.2 Concept EV Set to Debut in Mar 15
Renowned German marque Volkswagen is tipped to unveil a brand-new concept EV named the ID.2 later in Mar 15, 2023. As reported by Autocar UK, this new concept car will offer us a glimpse of what future VW EVs might look like.
What’s more interesting is that one of the upcoming models based on this ID.2 concept is also tipped to carry on VW's iconic nameplate, the Golf. Quoting an insider within Volkswagen, said report suggests that this next-gen ‘Golf’ is scheduled to go on sale later in 2025 at a relatively affordable targeted base price of €22,500 (approx. RM100,000).

Sources from Autocar UK also confirmed that the ID.2 concept EV will be the first VW model to underpin the VW Group’s new MEB+ EV platform. This new platform is the updated version of the current MEB platform, promising a much improved charging speed and maximum travel range, thanks to the introduction of lithium iron phosphate battery packs.
Furthermore, the ID.2 is set to be offered in single-motor, front-wheel-drive form only. However, said sources from Volkswagen also confirm the MEB+ platform will support dual-motor, four wheel-drive models.
Previously, VW’s boss Thomas Schafer suggested that the Golf nameplate, alongside its performance-oriented variants like the GTI and R, will join the firm’s current ID EV line-up. Speaking at the LA Auto Show last year, the boss said, “We have iconic brand names, Golf and GTI. It would be crazy to let them die and slip away. We will stick with the ID logic but iconic models will carry a name.”
Prior to this revelation, there have been rumours circulating around that suggested the next-gen Golf might be based-off the current ID.3 EV. However, with the facelifted version of the ID.3 recently launched, this rumour turned out to be untrue. Plus, the same source from Autocar UK also denied said rumour by saying “the true value of the Volkswagen Golf lies in a car the size of the ID.2”.
The upcoming ID.2 concept is said to be roughly based on the VW ID Life concept crossover, which debuted in an auto show at Munich back in 2020. Unlike the ID Life concept, the new ID.2 will boast a more conventional hatchback design developed in-house by a team of designers, spearheaded by VW’s new design boss, Andreas Mindt.
Aside from the lukewarm reception received, the firm’s decision to go with the hatchback configuration for the ID.2 also came after Cupra – one of the brands under VW Group – has recently launched the Cupra UrbanRebel concept EV.
In terms of dimension, the ID.2 is said to be slotted perfectly between the Golf and Polo, with its length reportedly measured at around 4,250 MM. For comparison, the current-gen Volkswagen Golf Mk8 measures 4,284 MM long, while the Polo clocks in at only 4,074 MM lengthwise.
With all of these revelations not officially confirmed or denied by VW representatives, the best bet is to wait for the tipped Mar 15 launch date. As always, stay tuned here at Caricarz.com for the follow-up report on this exciting revelation.
