- SIC Closed For Major Resurfacing Until 27 April
The Sepang International Circuit (SIC) is undergoing major resurfacing works. This has prompted its closure until 27 April, 2023, as confirmed by the circuit’s management through its official newsletter issued earlier this week. According to which, said resurfacing works began as early as 20 March, 2023.
“The main track at SIC has been fully utilized for motorsports events and activities, including local and international championships, and is now closed. Due to the homologation renewal this year, the track requires further touch-ups and resurfacing from Turn 7 to 12,” said SIC management.
The 5.543 KM-long circuit last underwent a full resurfacing effort back in 2016. This latest effort stems from the circuit’s requirement to meet standards set by the International Motorcycling Federation (FIM), ahead of this year’s Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix (MotoGP) event set for November.
Adding to which is the fact that the circuit saw nearly full utilisation since the Covid 19 pandemic-driven MCO restrictions were fully lifted last year. As a result, certain sections of the track, namely parts of its infamous South Track layout, has become both uneven and bumpy.
Furthermore, SIC also noted the appointment of Nippon Road as the contractors for this latest resurfacing project. A special mixture of locally-made compounds will be required to meet the necessary standards.
