World's First Electric Car Charging Road Coming In 2025

The electric road system (ERS) allows EVs to recharge while driving.

Sweden will open the world’s first permanently electrified stretch of road in 2025 which allows EVs to recharge while driving. The historic electrified highway known as electric road system (ERS) enables the vehicles to travel farther between charge station visits, addressing the issue of limited electric range in lower-cost EVs and making them more viable. Furthermore, the road chosen in Sweden is the E20, which runs through the country's major cities of Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmo. This highway road is the first step in a larger plan that will see over 3,000 kilometres of Swedish roads converted to electric vehicles.

However, Sweden has yet to decide which type of electric road the first motorway will use. For the record, Sweden has been a pioneer in electrified road testing and has already tried three leading solutions, so hopefully a solution will emerge soon. A two-kilometer stretch of road in Gavle, central Sweden, opened in 2016 that used overhead electric lines to allow heavy vehicles to recharge via pantographs, similar to an electric train or tram. Later, a 1.6-kilometer stretch of road in Gotland was electrified by placing charge coils beneath the asphalt.

In 2018, Trafikverket unveiled the world's first charging rail along a two-kilometer stretch, allowing electric trucks to lower a moving arm that picked up power. While this technology is currently only used for trucks, it will soon be used for EVs if an inductive under-road charging system is implemented.

According to the researchers, only 25% of Sweden's road network would need to be electrified in order to present the most efficient option. Euro News reported that Sweden has partnered with Germany and France to share experience and research findings, while the United Kingdom, the United States, and India are also stepping up efforts to build electrified roads.
