The Nyobolt EV Concept Is A Reborn Lotus Elise That Fully Recharges In 6 Minutes!
Lotus Elise-based Nyobolt EV Concept features batteries than can fully recharge in mere minutes!
Say hello to the Nyobolt EV Concept all-electric sportscar. Essentially, this is a rebirth of the much-loved – and lauded – Lotus Elise lightweight sportscar that now harnesses electric power and advanced lightweight batteries than can be fully recharged in mere minutes using current charging tech.
Nyobolt is a UK-based start-up founded in 2019 that aims to solve charging issues plaguing consumer confidence in EVs. This concept was co-created by the firm with Julian Thompson and CALLUM Designs as a platform to showcase the highly advanced new battery hardware harnessed.
These lightweight batteries from Nyobolt have were tested for over 2,000 fast charge cycles and showed no significant degradation.
Though it packs a small rating of just 35 kWh, Nyobolt claims that this concept’s lithium-ion battery pack can be fully recharged in a mere 6 minutes. Impressively, Nyobolt claims that the battery has been tested for over 2,000 fast charge cycles showing no significant battery degradation.
The quicker charging capacity touted by the Nyobolt was achieved through simplifying the charging process to its bare components. It called for the development of new materials, cell designs and software controls that allow the battery to be more powerful and efficient.
Nyobolt says new materials, cell designs, and software controls were developed for these new lightweight and ultra-rapid charging batteries.
The company even says that such charging speeds will be possible once 1 MW (Megawatt) chargers become available. Also, the tech isn’t limited to just small batteries as larger packs could also adopt it.
Nyobolt continues by noting that a full charge should grant a range of up to 250 KM when installed in this sports coupe. The firm chose not to reveal the machine’s weight, but vaguely says it weighs “closer to one tonne than two,” which suggests a sub-1,500 KG ballpark figure.
Hints of the original Lotus Elise sportcar's design are obvious, but this concept sits slightly longer and wider with a slightly heavier sub-1,500 KG weight.
Thompson, who designed the original Lotus Elise in 1994, has reportedly long desired to reboot said classic. Evidently, the Nyobolt EV Concept is not a total replica either. It does feature carbon fibre bodywork, 19-inch wheels, and it even sits 10 MM wider and 150 MM longer than the Elise.
High-tech side-view cameras (left) also appear to be very aerodynamic. Note that the Type 2 charging port's discreet integration in the B-pillar (right).
Notable too are the discreetly integrated side-view cameras and the Type 2 charging port. The latter is covertly housed in the B-pillar. Also, like the original Elise, this concept even features a removeable roof section to deliver open-top driving thrills.
This striking electric concept will reportedly see just 25 cars built annually once Nyobolt puts it into production, which will be decided around 12 months after the proof-of-concept prototype hits the road. Also, the Nyobolt EV Concept sportscar is set to bow publicly at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed.
