L-R: Nissan's current EVs range consists of the Ariya crossover, Sakura kei class compact, and the Leaf.

In a press statement issued earlier this week, Japanese automaker Nissan revealed that its global electric vehicles (EVs) sales have surpassed the 1 million mark.

A breakdown of its cumulative EV sales as of June this year saw Nissan shifting the bulk of its EVs in Europe, where it successfully sold 320,000 units thus far. Both Japan and China saw 230,000 EV units sold respectively, with North American sales adding a further 210,000 to the tally.

To date, Nissan has shifted 650,000 units of the Nissan Leaf since it debuted back in 2010.

Sales in other regions, on the other hand, pale in comparison to the aforementioned markets in region with just 10,000 units shifted thus far. However, EV sales figures from said regions – Asia in particular – are set to grow over the coming years.

According to Nissan, much of this milestone figure was driven by the Leaf hatch, which saw over 650,000 units shifted worldwide since 2010. The model is currently marketed in over 50 markets globally – ours included – though much of its sales are driven by the Japanese, North American, and European markets.

The Sakura, a kei class mini-EV, is sold by Nissan primarily in Japan. Over 50,000 orders were collected by Nissan since its debut last year.

Besides the Leaf, Nissan also offers the Sakura mini-EV in  the kei class segment of its home market of Japan, and the new Ariya crossover SUV, both added into the brand’s EV line up since 2022. Nissan adds that it received over 50,000 cumulative orders for the Japan-only Sakura offering as of June this year.

Whilst Nissan’s global EV sales appear to show growth, the story is vastly different locally. Presently, Nissan assemblers and distributors Edaran Tan Chong Motor (ETCM) offers the second-gen Leaf as its sole EV offering since 2019.  An updated version with a Type 2 port added was introduced back in March this year.

On sale since 2019, ETCM offers the second-gen Leaf for RM168,888, or from RM1,800 monthly via a
three-year 'subscription' plan.

For Malaysian consumers, the Leaf is priced at RM168,888 sans insurance for outright purchases. Prospects also have the option to ‘subscribe’ for one instead via a leasing program that’s priced as low a RM1,800 monthly over a span of three years.

Nissan's latest EV, the Ariya, is poised to enter the Malaysian market, but it remains unclear as to when this will happen.

Beyond the Leaf, ETCM is also expected to add the Ariya into its EV line-up, though when this will happen remains uncertain. As reported prior, the availability of the Ariya is subject to allocation by principals Nissan Motor Corp themselves. In other words, this may take a while…
