- Volkswagen Golf R Mk8 Set For CKD In Malaysia Soon?
Is VPCM set to induct the VW Golf R Mk8 into its CKD efforts soon?(Image source: Facebook)
A local Volkswagen dealer has taken to Facebook earlier this month indicating that the Volkswagen Golf R Mk8 is set to be locally assembled (CKD) by Volkswagen Passenger Cars Malaysia (VPCM) soon. Through these posts, which you can see here and here, said dealer also states that bookings are currently being accepted too.
VPCM has kept mum about the matter and hasn’t issued an official statement regarding the matter yet. Said model is still featured on the official Volkswagen Malaysia website for now, but based on this dealer’s posting, we can perhaps see details in which change soon enough.
Initially, VPCM were locally producing the eight-gen Golf in R-Line (left) and GTI (right) guises.
Initially, VPCM inducted the eighth generation Golf into its CKD efforts in both R-Line and GTI forms. The former variant was quietly dropped from the line-up not too long ago, but VPCM kept the latter signature hot-hatch guise assembled locally, even updating it recently to include a host of IQ.Drive ADAS features.
As for the Golf R performance flagship, it was offered exclusively as a fully imported (CBU) offering, but the signs we’re seeing indicates that this is about to change. Surely, by producing it locally, we can perhaps see a revision in price for said performance flagship, which presently commands RM429,990.
VPCM recently updated to locally-built Golf GTI Mk 8 by adding the IQ.Drive ADAS suite.
Perhaps through localisation, we can also likely expect VPCM to update and lace the Golf R with the IQ.Drive ADAS suite in full as how it did with the Golf GTI recently. Apart from which, expect little else to change in this high-powered guise of the eighth-gen Golf.
Packing no less than 320 HP and 400 NM with AWD, the Golf R Mk 8 despatches 0-100 KM/H in just 4.8 secs.
As a refresher, the Golf R Mk8 for Malaysia harnesses a similar 2.0-litre TSI 4-cyl turbo heart as the GTI, albeit with higher 320 HP and 400 NM outputs managed by a slick 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic box and 4Motion all-wheel-drive (AWD) with torque-vectoring. This sees it despatch 0-100 KM/H in just 4.8 seconds.
Should this alleged move towards CKD pan out as truth, and that it receives the same IQ.Drive ADAS upgrade added, what would be the right price for this super-hatch? Share your guesses in the comments below, and our social platforms too…
