- The Mahindra Thar.e Concept Is A Radical EV 4x4 From India
The Mahindra Thar.e may just be a concept now, but it's set to enter production soon.
Pictured here is the rugged and cool-looking new Mahindra Thar.e concept EV 4x4 which just made its rounds online this week. A brainchild of Indian automaking giant Mahindra, it stands as perhaps a glimpse of what the Indian marque intends to do with its future electrified products.
Being a concept perhaps explains its straight-out-of-sci-fi looks, which features overtly squared touches all around that boosts the Thar.e’s presence and ruggedness. A dash of tech is exuded through its adoption of striking LED lighting, whilst the steel front bumper perhaps signifies this 4x4’s intent in the rough.
What’s also notable is the immense 300 MM ground clearance the Mahindra Thar.e concept sits on, which is sufficient to keep its undercarriage and perhaps its floor-mounted battery pack somewhat safe, even in the harshest or most toughest terrains.
Underneath, this concept underpins the Mahindra INGLO (INdia GLObal) platform, which is also used by other Mahindra products.
At the rear, the concept’s squared design theme continues with its rear fascia in general, bolstered by equally squared LED taillights. There’s yet another steel bumper here too to match the one up front. You even get the traditional 4x4 style of having a spare tyre mounted on the rear hatch.
Moreover, Mahindra reportedly touts this concept in having best-in-class approach, departure, and ramp-over angles plus water-fording abilities. This is critical considering how serious Mahindra reportedly is with its intent to put this concept into mass production.
Though shown as concept in five-door form, production-bound versions will also reportedly see a three-door version available. Both will underpin the marque’s INGLO (India GLObal) chassis architecture used in other Mahindra products featuring varying wheelbases between 2,775 MM and 2,975 MM.
Notably, the rugged looks aren't just for show either as Mahindra says the road-going version will boasts class-leading off-roading chops.
Details surrounding the all-electric off-roader’s powertrain remains undisclosed, however Autocar India touts that INGLO-based Mahindra BEVs are set to adopt motors supplied by Volkswagen. These ought to promise either 107 HP and 135 NM, or up to 282 HP and 535 NM.
This will see the production-bound Thar.e concept differ greatly from other INGLO-based Mahindra BEV products which adopts both batteries and motors from Chinese EV marque BYD. Instead, just the latter’s 60 kWh and 80 kWh batteries will likely be fielded into the production version of the Thar.e concept.
Either way, we’re pretty excited to see how the final form of the Mahindra Thar.e concept would pan out. Given how things look presently, this might stand to be the coolest-looking EV 4x4 to hit the roads and terrains…
