- Report: VW ID. GTI Concept Set to Enter Production in 2026
VW CEO Thomas Schafer reveals that the new ID. GTI concept will enter production in 2026!
Hours after unveiling its latest concept model, renowned German marque Volkswagen has finally broken the silence regarding its plan with the new ID. GTI concept. Speaking to Autocar UK, VW’s CEO Thomas Schafer has announced a production version of the ID. GTI is already in the marque’s plan
“Production has already been decided as part of our electric offensive. It remains sporty, technologically progressive and accessible but now has a new interpretation for tomorrow’s world – electric, fully connected and extremely emotive,” Schafer commented.
Volkswagen ID. GTI concept EV hot-hatch
Set to enter production in 2026, Schafer said the road-legal version of the ID. GTI will be the spiritual all-electric successor to the marque’s iconic hot-hatch model, the VW Golf GTI. Similar to the ICE-powered GTI, the production version of the ID. GTI will also boast a front-wheel drive (FWD) setup with a front electronic diff-lock.
In terms of dimensions, the ID. GTI concept measures 4,104 MM long, 1,840 MM wide, 1,499 MM tall, and with a wheelbase of 2,600 MM – slotting it perfectly between the Polo supermini and Golf hatch. Similar to the ID.2all concept unveiled prior, the ID. GTI also underpins VW’s proprietary MEB platform. Unfortunately, details regarding the powertrain and battery setup of the ID. GTI remains in the dark, but we’d reckon it’ll get a peppier setup than the ID.2all’s 223 HP-rated electric motor setup.
The ID. GTI concept is the first all-electric VW model to don the iconic GTI nameplate
Aside from the FWD layout, the production version of the ID. GTI will also retain the iconic GTI moniker, albeit with a different abbreviation to match its all-electric stature. Instead of “injection”, the ‘I’ in the ‘GTI’ will now stand for “intelligence”. This also makes the ID. GTI being the first all-electric VW model to don the GTI nameplate, as previous ID models carry the GTX moniker – which is used only for all-wheel-drive (AWD) electric sporty cars, according to VW design boss Andreas Mindt.
Will the all-electric GTI model don the new GTI logo?
On the topic of GTI, VW has refrained itself from adding any comments regarding its patent application for the new GTI logo with the ‘I’ lettering being stylised as an electric bolt symbol. While many have speculated that this symbol indicates an all-electric GTI model is coming, it remains unclear whether the new ID. GTI production model will carry this new GTI emblem instead of the traditional one.
Set to debut in 2026, the ID. GTI will make way for the production version of the ID.2all concept (right), which is set to debut earlier in 2025
As mentioned above, the production version of the Volkswagen ID. GTI is set to make its debut later in 2026, with its production planned to commence in the same year. Should everything go in plan, an all-electric GTI hot-hatch is poised to enter the market as early as 2027, where it will make way for the production version of the ID.2all concept that’ll debut earlier in 2025.
