Volkswagen has released the first images of the upcoming electric estate version of their flagship model, now officially named the ID.7 Tourer. This all-electric estate is scheduled for a European launch in 2024 and boasts a combination of spaciousness and efficiency. The final design will be unveiled in the coming months.

Volkswagen over the years has been a renowned manufacturer of wagon body vehicles, traditionally named Variant or Shooting Brake (as seen in the case of the Arteon). The ID.7 Tourer marks the brand's foray into the world of all-electric estate cars, set to make its debut in 2024.

The key to achieving extended ranges lies in an aerodynamic design. The previously introduced ID.7 sedan, currently rolling out in Europe, demonstrated exceptional aerodynamics with a Cd-value of 0.234. The ID.7 Tourer would maintain a similarly impressive Cd value of 0.242.

Despite being partially hidden under distinctive Indian summer camouflage, the vehicle's elongated hatchback design is clearly visible.

The camouflage treatment takes inspiration from the multi-layer paint of the ID.7 sedan, first revealed at CES in Las Vegas. The Indian summer-themed camouflage seamlessly integrates QR codes into its design, enhancing the disguise.

Thanks to its short overhangs and a lengthy wheelbase, the ID.7 Tourer would offer a high-quality interior with ample space to seat five passengers on board. The trunk space would be 545 litres with the rear seat up-right and 1,714 litres folded down. It is also understood that the ID.7 Tourer being an up-market offering would include offering such as a 15-inch touchscreen for the infotainment system, electronically-controlled air vents, massaging front seats, and a 14-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. However, for full details we have to wait for future announcements.

Like all models in the ID. family, the ID.7 Tourer is based on the MEB platform of the Volkswagen Group. This platform's benefits include short overhangs and a long wheelbase, translating into an interior characterised by a sense of generous space and increased trunk capacity. In terms of battery capacity we believe two capacities would surely be offered, the 77kWh and 85kWh as this has been used in the ID.5 and ID.Buzz. While the powertrain would surely include rear drive and potentially a dual motor four wheel drive.

Production of the ID.7 Tourer, like its sedan counterpart, will take place at the Volkswagen plant in Emden. Following the ID.4, the ID.7 becomes the second MEB-based model to be manufactured in the north-western region of Germany.
