In view of the Low Carbon Mobility Blueprint, Malaysia has set a target to establish 10,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging points by 2025. In order to accomplish this goal, the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), PLANMalaysia, and the Ministry of Local Government Development have worked together to create the Malaysia Electric Vehicle Charging Network (MEVnet) dashboard, a specialised online platform.

A breakdown from the data populated into the MEVnet shows that at this point there are a total of 1430 electric vehicle charging bays (EVCB) at 620 locations. From this data, 1,127 are AC chargers while 303 are DC chargers with 567 located outdoor and 863 indoor. MEVnet also indicated the 2025 goal is to have 10,789 EVCB at 3,716 locations.

From the data shared we can also see that the top 5 states with the highest EV charger growth are Selangor (507 EVCB), Kuala Lumpur (386 EVCB), Johor (151 EVCB) and Penang (112 EVCB). Having said that, it is also evident that some states such as Perlis and Labuan till date do not have any recorded EV charging facilities.

Putrajaya, which is the country’s Federal Government Administrative Centre where we assume EV chargers would be aplenty only somehow till date only house 6 EVCBs which is a far cry from the targeted 103 EVCB by 2023.

Some East Coast states such as Kelantan and Terangganu only have 5 EVCB and 7 EVCB respectively making EV ownership and travel not so convenient. Meanwhile East Malaysia states of Sabah till date only have 6 EVCB while Sarawak records a slightly better 35 EVCB.

We did report a month back where one reason for the slow movement in EV charging facilities development is the uncertainty factor with regards to the still absent finalised guideline from PLANMalaysia. However now with the guideline being somewhat clear, we certainly hope for some rapid movement in numbers in the coming year.

If we might add, some processes at the local council level needs to be revisited as feedback from CPOs has alway been with regards to the slow processes at this level. Furthermore, CPOs who are bearing all the cost to set up EVCBs would also hope to see parking facilities be allocated at no cost to them which would help a more rapid growth instead of the current deployment of a small number of chargers at every location.
